Final Summer Update

Darts -
Are you tired of getting my emails yet? I feel like I have sent a lot this summer. Don't worry, I will continue to send at least one per week all season long. Please continue to read them.
Although I have come down with a nasty cold and sore throat, I could not be more pleased with how the summer wrapped up this morning. This was the greatest Dart Challenge ever. We had our biggest turnout ever, there were tons of parents there supporting me and the TEAM, and we ran extremely well as a TEAM. We had our most ever girls run under 21:00 (8), under 22:00 (13), and under 23:00 (18). We also ran the 3rd best team time (combined top 5 times) ever for the girls - just barely behind 2007 and almost 2 minutes faster than last year. We had our most ever boys under 17:00 (7), and under 17:30 (13), and we ran the fastest boys team time by over 2 minutes (1:20.25 breaking last year's record of 1:22.41). I thought we ran very well as individuals and I thought we did a great job as a TEAM. Congrats to Austin Neuner for running the course record for current high school athletes (15:49). Congrats to Neuner, Brad Nye, Joe White, Preston Johnson, Skylar Williams, Brayden Cromar, Logan Wood, Shea Martinez, Anni Andersen, Meghan Hedquist, Abby Frodsham, Tessa Brown, and Madi Holt for running times fast enough to get yourselves on the back of the shirt next year. Congrats to all those who ran big time improvements over last year. Results are posted on www.dartchallenge5k.blogspot.com. Thanks for coming prepared and on time, and thanks for racing hard and making it fun and successful. A special thanks to all the parents who came to help this morning with registration, course directions, cutting fruit, the finish line, taking pictures, and many other things - we have some great parents on this TEAM. Also, congrats to my wife, Stefanie, for setting a blazing fast course record (17:27) and congrats to the boys who were able to beat her (including you, Colton).
I hope that all of you got some confidence from this morning's race. It is important that you realize we are ready for this season as a TEAM. We may still have some things to work on, but we have never been this ready to go out and work hard and race fast. This has been our best summer as a TEAM, and I want you to go into the season with confidence. Confidence in yourselves and in your teammates. Believe that the work you have done will pay off. Believe that the attitudes you have will help us to be successful. Obviously not everyone who is getting this email is satisfied with their summer or with the race today, but I want everyone on board as a TEAM as we go into this season that we are going to make it the best DXC season in history. That is all up to you. We have done the work and we are in a position to accomplish some great things. Now you all need to continue to bring positive energy to practice, continue to take care of yourselves, continue to work together and believe in each other, and continue to trust your coaching staff to help get you ready to go. We cannot let doubt creep in as we go after our goals. (Even in the challenges we will face).
If there are any of you who are disappointed in your summer training, think of this week as a fresh start, and come and run with us this week. There is still time to get ready for the later races, and there is still a lot of fun to be had.

Here's what we got:
1) Send me your miles for the final week of the summer - I will be posting in on the board in my room.
2) Show up to practice on Monday in my classroom with your running clothes on at 2:45. 9th graders get over to the school as quick as you can - we will wait for you in my classroom or at the bottom of the stairs by the south doors. We will need to work out some carpooling from Farmington and Fairfield this week. I will have lockers ready to hand out on Monday or Tuesday. Boys, if you bring your own locks you can snag a locker in the TEAM room (I wouldn't put anything valuable in there not locked up). Sophomores will have to share lockers in there.
3) Tuesday - Mandatory TEAM meeting in my classroom at 2:45. Everyone be there. This would be a good day for new runners to show up. I will go over the info with the freshman later that day.
4) Eligibility - If you haven't turned your stuff in, do so by Wednesday this week.
5) Grass Relays - We will be meeting at the school at 6:15 am next Saturday to go down to American Fork for the grass relays (I know that is really early). We will be going down and back on buses. The first race starts at 8:00am. More details to come this week.
6) Bob Firman - Watch for the surveys in the mail this week. Fill them out and turn them in to the office ASAP.

Thanks for a great summer. Enjoy the last few moments of it.

XC Summer Update - Week 11

Darts -
A very brief email this week. I cannot believe we only have one week left of summer training. It has gone by fast - the season will probably do the same thing to us - rush right by. Take every opportunity to enjoy it and learn from it. Please send me your miles from week 11. As we compile the summer total, it is great to see how far you have come and how much you have accomplished. With this week's reported miles, the boys should surpass last year's record. The girls have already broken the old record and now have 2 more weeks to add on to make the record really hard to get in the future.

Here is the important stuff:

This week's schedule:
Monday - 7:00am at the vita course for the final time this summer. If you have not been coming all summer and would like to make a fresh start with us - Monday morning would be the time to come. We may even have a little treat for you.
Tuesday - 7:30pm - Meet at the track. We are going to be doing 400m repeats. This workout should be a lot of fun. I am finally going to let you run a little faster. If you have to come late because of mutual - we should be there until after 9:00pm. Try not to eat right before you come to the workout. Stay hydrated all day.
Thursday - 7:00am - Meet at Barnes Park on the Northeast side. We will be doing a workout on the Dart Challenge Course.
Saturday - 7:00am - Meet at Barnes Park for the DART CHALLENGE (which starts at 8:00am). I want you there at 7:00 so that we can get through the registration and so that you can get a good TEAM warm up before the race. Please bring your registration on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday so that I can make as many race numbers as possible before the actual morning of the race. The registration flier is attached to this email.
* If you are trying to get a high week in mileage, I would recommend a morning run Tuesday before our intervals, possibly 2 medium runs on Wednesday, and extra running after the race on Saturday.

Eligibility:
As I have been stressing, we need to get the eligibility in by Tuesday if at all possible. Refer to the email I sent on Thursday and last week for more information. I will have all the papers with me on Monday at the trails. The school office will be open to pay the fee on Monday and Tuesday. Let me know if you or your parents have any questions.

First Week of School:
We will meet everyday in my classroom at 2:45. We will be starting the workouts right as the 9th graders get to the school. Plan on being at practice from 2:45 to about 4:45 daily. Bring your running clothes on the first day. We will have a TEAM meeting for any new people on the 2nd day.

That's all for now -
Coach Talley

I got this from Logan Petty's dyestat account (and I liked it):
"Hey. Don't ever let somebody tell you... You can't do something. Not even me. All right? You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period. "-- Chris Gardner (Pursuit of Happyness)

Week 10 Update

Darts -
I hope this email finds you satisfied with another week of summer training. What a summer it has been. It seems like each week as I sit down to write my update email I am reminded of how great our TEAM is because of the efforts and the sacrifices from each of you. I am feeling lucky to be your coach tonight.
I really felt like hard work was paying off this week. I think your consistency and commitment are really starting to show. If you have made it this far into the summer, congratulations. I hope that your training has been worth it in your minds (you know that it is in mine).
I felt the TEAM runs this week were as good as any summer week I can remember. It was good to be back on the trails on Monday after a week of camp, the Lagoon run ended up being very solid and you all looked strong on the hills, and then we capped off the week with the best tempo run we have ever had as a TEAM. Excellent work.

This morning (Saturday) I had a great time running in the Bair Gutsman 11 mile trail race. For those of you who don't know, the race begins in Fruit Heights and goes up a difficult trail to the top of Francis Peak and then down the back side into Farmington Canyon. The race has been around for over 30 years. The race motto is "Conquer Thyself". I think that is what running is all about - challenging yourself and meeting those challenges. Trying to get all the weaknesses out of your body and mind. Those Darts who ran in the race did an excellent job. Jared Ward (class of 2007) was the overall winner - he ran a course record time of 1:50.27. Logan Petty finished 4th in 1:53.28 (also under the old course record). It was a great race by Logan as he becomes the official 'Dart Gutsman' in the battle of the champions. I was happy with my 1:58.49 for 5th place. Jeff Taylor was 6th in 2:01.25, Austin Neuner 7th in 2:05.24, Logan Wood 8th in 2:05.53, Layne Mckenna (who joined us for camp - from Viewmont) was 9th in 2:08.18, Brayden Cromar was 10th in 2:08.56 (there have been years where this is close to winning), Cameron Harvey (class of '03) was 18th in 2:22.21, Steve Petty was 21st in 2:24.35, Steven Spjut (future Dart) was first for 14 and under in 2:25.48, Lisa Frischknecht (class of '02) was the 9th female in 2:36.27, Josh Ward (future Dart) was 2nd for 14 and under in 2:41.14, Keigunn Kunz finished his 3rd straight Gutsman in 2:43.04, Rachel Hunsaker (class of '10) finished 1st in her age group in 3:07.31, and Anna McKay and Jill Firmage (class of '09) finished tied for 2nd in their age group in 4:20.06. It was pretty dang cool.

Next Week's Training - For those of you who have strung together some high mileage over the past 3-5 straight weeks, you are under strict instructions to take this next week a little bit easier and cut your mileage back by about 20%. "High Mileage" in this case is different for each of you. If you have averaged 25 for the summer - and the past few weeks have been 33 - 50 - 38, I would like for you to be back around 25-30 for this next week. If one of the past 3 weeks has been low by any chance, you can keep this next week a little higher. Sometimes we forget how important it is for our bodies to recover. We are still going to run hard at the vita course, and we are going to have a good interval workout on Thursday morning, but I wouldn't mind seeing some lower mileage for a lot of you who have built up to 35-55 miles over the past few weeks. In case you don't want to do your own math, 20 % off of 50 miles = 40 miles. 20% off of 40 = 32. 20% off of 60 = 48. Even if this hurts your overall summer miles by 10 or so, I feel it is important to trust me here. The main reason for this is that the following 2 weeks we are going to start to get more intense. I am going to work you quite hard the week of the Dart Challenge, and we are going to come back with some pretty hard runs the week of Grass Relays (as well as adjusting to being back in school). This next week is possibly the only week I am also giving you permission to only run 5 of the 7 days (still come to the TEAM practices, of course). Most of you have earned a week like this. Some of you have not - in which case, this previous paragraph does not apply to you (you know who you are), I hope you take advantage of this next week by working hard and getting a good amount of miles. If you have questions about this concept or if you are confused about this paragraph - let me know.

Eligibility - the papers and participation fees are due by August 18th. I really need each of you to be responsible with this. If you need me to send you the information again - let me know. (It was the email I sent out this past week). I will have all the forms with me at practice the next 2 weeks. I forgot to mention that there is a special form the 9th graders need to fill out.

Coming Up:
Monday, 8/9 - 7:00am at the vita course - be prepared to run fast.
Thursday, 8/12 - 7:00am at Davis - we are running to Nichols Park to run some 1000m repeats on the grass.
Saturday, 8/14 - Colton Cottrell's Eagle Project (Teddy Bear 5k) at Barnes Park - 7:30am on the Dart Challenge Course - I only want you racing "all-out" if you are not going to be able to run the Dart Challenge the following Saturday.
Saturday, 8/21 - Dart Challenge 5k. I will send out an email with the registration form again - or you can get one from me at practice this week. Everyone is expected to run and to treat it like our first cross country meet - even if you have not been running much or feel like you are "not ready". It is a TEAM fundraiser, and I expect all of you to be involved by running in the race. If you are hurt, you can still show up to help me out and to cheer on your teammates. If you just plain don't show up without letting me know why, I am going to be disappointed. Try to invite others to run as well. It is a normal road race, but sometimes people think it is just for high schoolers. www.dartchallenge5k.blogspot.com

That's all for now - We have some great things in front of us.
Send me your miles -
Sincerely,
Coach Talley

XC Camp Photos

Outstanding Tempo Run this morning. Best that I could find on record for both boys and girls. The hard work is paying off.

All of my camp pictures are now posted on facebook - http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?aid=66882&id=1134523535
I may get some pictures up on here eventually.

XC Camp Update

Darts -
Each year I have a few goals going into high altitude camp. The first is that we get some quality running in at 10,000 feet. The second is that no one gets too beat up from the workload (the reason you need to be prepared). And the third is that we build some team unity by getting to know each other a little better. This year's camp turned out to be a huge success in those and other areas. I knew it would be a challenge with so many of you up there, but I came home extremely satisfied in the way things went. Monday's run, as always, was a shock to the system, but everything I heard was positive. Tuesday's mile repeats taught me a few things about our TEAM - we showed some mental and physical toughness that we are going to need as the season progresses. It also showed me a few areas where we could use some work. There was some great TEAM running on the long trail Wednesday going up to Red Castle. The Thursday run from Bridger Lake is always one of my favorite trails - personally I was a little beat up, but I enjoyed the run for its beauty and I was grateful to be running with so many good kids. All of the runs showed me that this TEAM knows how to work hard and have a good time. The games were fun, the conversations were hilarious at times, and the memories are going to be lasting. I hope that you each had the opportunity to learn something about yourself - that you came home from camp with a greater appreciation for running and for your TEAM. I hope that you made some new friends and that you strengthened older friendships. I hope that camp is something that will motivate you to continue to run hard for yourselves and for your TEAM. Where we go from here is completely up to you. We talked quite a bit about individual and TEAM goals up at camp - let's go after those goals with passion and focus.
Thanks a ton to all of the coaches and parents who helped make camp possible. Thanks to Janae, Ken, Steve, and Brad for coming up all week and giving their time and making camp a lot of fun. Thanks to the Brown family, the Seelos family, the McCleary family, the Neuner family, the Hansen family, Striders, Interform Graphics, Ragnar, and Peak Performance for all of the cool prizes. Thanks to all the parents who took the time to drive up or back from camp. And thanks to all of the kids for your positive attitudes and for following all of the camp rules without too many reminders.
Congrats to our Athletes of the week at camp: Brad Nye, Jackson Sagers, Tessa Brown, and Joanna Boyd.
Congrats to our Campers of the week (the most helpful): Matt Munns and Abby Frodsham
Congrats to the winning team - Day 4 - led by Spencer Jones and Meghan Hedquist
Congrats to our Horseshoe Champions - Alex Hedquist and Skylar Williams (Brad and I are definitely training for the rematch next year)

It is hard to believe that there are only 3 weeks left of summer training then we hit the school year and we start to race. Stay on top of your training. All the workouts from here out are mandatory workouts and I would like to know why you have to miss when you have to miss. If you have a good reason to miss - I am okay with that - but I expect you to be getting the workouts in on your own those days. We cannot afford to have zeros on the training logs from here out. Let's finish the summer with a lot of energy and a lot of focus on what we want to accomplish as a TEAM. The season will be over before you know it - so take every opportunity to enjoy the journey -
Thanks

Cross Country Update - Week 8

Darts -
It will be a very short update this weekend. There is still a lot to do to get ready for camp and my typing muscles are tired from running the marathon this morning.
1 - Send in your miles! - those going to camp - try to send them in before Sunday night (or send both weeks in when we get back).
2 - There will be no organized practice this next week. High Altitude Camp is next week. I have sent information to those of you who are going. Look for one final email this evening with important information. For those of you not going to camp, I hope that at some point in the future you will have an opportunity to go. I feel like we are bringing as many as we can this year and like those going are definitely prepared for the week because of their hard work and commitment. It is a great opportunity and a great experience, but it is only one part of your overall cross country experience. If you have not been as committed as you would like to up to this point, set some goals and work hard so that you don't miss out on some of the other cool things we will do this season.
3 - Excellent job at the Deseret News 10k this morning by those who ran. The results are not up, but when they are posted, I will put them on the blog ( www.davisxc.blogspot.com ). I am pretty sure that both our boys and our girls finished 2nd behind the Utah all-star teams (beating out the U.S. all-stars that came in on both sides). I am also pretty sure that our 'B' Teams finished in the top 5. Everyone did a great job and it was fun to be a part of. One result I do know is that Austin Neuner tore it up running 31:14. He finished 3rd overall for the high school boys. Hard work paying off for sure. I will make sure to put the other results up on the web site. I did decide to run the marathon and was happy with my 2:38 finishing time.
4 - The next organized practice will be on Monday August 2 at the vita course - 7:00am. Those not going to camp are welcome and encouraged to go up to the vita course at 7:00am this next Monday.
Keep up the great running
