DXC Update - State Championships

Darts,

The State Championships showed again that Utah is very competitive in cross country. It's always an exciting day full of surprises. It's such a tough course, and I was happy with . In the girls race, only 19 points separated 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th place, and for the boys only 21 points separated 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th. Our girls took 4th and the boys took 7th. Everyone fought hard and we had some ups and downs, but we can always learn something from each race and get up and start fighting again. How we respond the next few weeks will show our character and toughness. I'm already looking forward to the next few weeks as we get ready for Southwest and move into indoor track.

DXC Update - Region Championships

Darts,

Great job so far this season. Region was great, but we're not done. We're going to the State championships on Wednesday, October 18 and we would like everyone on the TEAM to keep training through state. It's going to be a beautiful week for running. Show up to practice with tons of positive energy. I hope the entire TEAM is planning on going down to State on the bus to cheer on our TEAM. We need all your energy.

Region Championships
Friday was the Region 1 Championships. First off, let me say how grateful and touched I was to see all the teams from our region band together as a family of runners. Before the racing began, we received cards and posters from the other teams which was very nice, but it didn't end there. I'll get to the rest of it later.

It was so great to see you racing with heart, determination, and purpose. So many of you ran a faster pace at Region than you did at Pre-Region... which is the same course, but a mile shorter. For many of you, it was your best race of the season! The JV Girls kicked off the racing with some great performances, and it quickly turned into a battle with the girls from Weber. I have to admit, it gave me quite a scare. Usually teams can't match our depth in the JV races, but Weber had girls everywhere. The top 25 finishers were exclusively girls from Davis and Weber with Jennica Robinson finishing as the JV girls champion. It was great to see our girls run together and push each other.

25 of the top 28 JV Boys, including the top 17, were from Davis. Some great packs formed, and I saw some runners take risks and race with guts for the last official race of the season. It's inspiring to watch so many of you working and finishing together. Every JV boys race this year, with the exception of Murray, was won by an athlete from Davis. It all came together for Nate Iverson as he pulled away with about 400 to go and looked strong doing it. Garrett, Jalen, Caden, and Noah rounded out the top 5 for a perfect score.

The race that I was most nervous for was definitely the Varsity Girls race. It was going to take an inspiring race from our girls to pull it off. Weber returned 6 of their 7 girls that took 4th at state last year, including the top returner (and hopefully 2017 state champion). Our girls were smart and tough. Ellie and Ruth bided their time the first mile and let the race calm down before making their move to finish in a solid 3rd and 5th place. Sydney was the difference maker, and Madeline and Rosie raced with determination and toughness to finish off the scoring all in the top 10 of the race. The final score was 35 - 39 for Davis. I was so pumped I almost forgot there was another race. You girls are awesome!

Here's where our region is so awesome! Cojo and Chunk both said they were definitely going to come to region and showed up to the races in their matching wheelchairs. All the runners from Fremont had "Connor" written down one arm and "Adam" down the other. I didn't see it, but at the starting line while our boys were getting ready to race, all the other teams got together for one big "DAVIS!" cheer for our team. How neat is that? The Fremont coach sent me the video. We had a lot to run for, including McKennion and Sara that still weren't cleared to run. Syracuse gave us a poster that said, "We run today for those who can't," and that is what happened. Our boys were inspired. The highest anyone was going to finish at Region was 3rd place since Bronson and Zach Winter from Fremont were going 1-2 (and hopefully the same at state). Seth didn't panic and didn't move into 3rd place until the second half of the race and finished 13 seconds clear of 4th place. Jared had a Danny Diaz-type race to finish second on our team followed by Derek, CJ, and Trey. I know our boys pushed themselves through more pain than ever because they were willing to hurt for their brothers. The final act of kindness offered to our TEAM came when our boys were announced Region Champions. Fremont started it off, and then the rest of the region joined in to give our boys a standing ovation. I got a little choked up while taking pictures. Good thing the camera was covering my face. I wish I would've gotten a picture/video of the other teams cheering for us. It was touching. Like I said, we usually don't get a lot of love coming our way, but this is different. As runners we are family. We have a bond that comes from pushing ourselves past unbearable pain and from the countless miles on the roads and trails. We love our region and wish them all well at State.
