DXC Update - 10/30

Darts -
It was an awesome first week of Post-Season training. It was fun to see you all working so hard and working with so much determination. I hope you were able to rest and recover a little bit this weekend--just enough to get back at it on Tuesday. We have 2 more weeks of pretty hard work and then we'll be ready for a strong Nike Southwest Race. I did update the Vita Course All-Time list, and a HUGE congrats to all of you who joined the sub 50 and sub 63 clubs and to Aubrey Argyle for setting the girls all-time record at an incredible time of 49:58!! (http://davisxc.blogspot.com/p/vita-course-all-time.html)

Those of you who have not been coming to practices (since State) - You should come!! I would love to see more of you at the practices for the next two weeks. We had a few die-hards who aren't going to NXR, but I would love for all of you who did XC with us this season to come to our final 2-3 weeks. At the very least, you should all be doing some running on your own. If you take the entire month of November off (and the last half of October), you are going to have a lot of re-building to do going into indoor track. Anyway, I hope you all know that you are invited and encouraged to keep running with us - even if you don't have any more cross country races this season. There is always something to work for: indoor and outdoor track and next year's cross country. The work you are doing right now (or not doing) will effect your fitness and performances through those seasons. We strongly believe that in order to reach your potential as a distance runner, it is important to train all year (with some much needed breaks in between seasons). Remember that all 9th graders can compete with us in indoor track. We hope to have our strong group of freshmen continue to build.

Uniform Turn In - Please bring your uniforms to turn in this week on Tuesday or Wednesday at practice (or drop them off after school in my classroom). We would like to collect all of the uniforms so that we can make an inventory for track. Please turn them in EVEN IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO TRACK. I will be keeping a record of those who turn in their uniforms. If you do not turn in your uniform this week, you will be fined through myDSD.

Nike Regionals - I have attached the itinerary and the waiver for Nike Regionals. All of you who are attending need to turn in your money and waiver by Friday, November 11th. The cost is $300. Checks need to be made out to "Davis County Running Club". You can use 100% of your proceeds from the 12 hour run. You will also need to make sure you are members of the USATF (Club #34-0166). More information about the USATF is on the bottom of the itinerary. Join after November 1st if you are a first time member, because it will last through all of 2017 (Simplot and NXR next year). Please let me know if you or your parents have any other questions.

12 Hour Run -
We are going to be able to use the track and the field for the 12 hour run "fundraiser" next Friday (November 4th). We will start with a small group at 1:00pm (during school) and keep the baton going until 1:00am. Everyone who wants to be involved will get to run at least 1 mile, but you can do more running with your teammates when it is their turn. We are shooting for at least 120 miles in the 12 hours (6:00 per mile). I handed out the pledge sheets and fundraising fliers at practice on Friday - and I will have them at practice this week as well. Anyone on the team is more than welcome to participate. Any proceeds raised by those not going to NXR will go into the running club budget - and are greatly appreciated!!

Grace Christiansen's Humanitarian Information -
Grace is heading to the Philippines and is looking for a few donations that she can take with her: Ties for perspective missionaries (used), Receiving Blankets (light and thin), small toys and stuffed animals (light weight), and/or cash or check donations (all money goes toward purchasing supplies for missionaries and orphans). Checks should be made out to "Type of Wood Charities, Inc". Any donations need to be turned in before November 11th. You can bring them to Grace or to my classroom. Thanks!

Alumni Update - Congrats to all of our alumni who ran in their college conference xc meets this past weekend. Ellie Child (Weber State) finished 1st in the Big Sky, Ashley Tyndall (SUU) finished 22nd in the Big Sky, Courtney Wayment (BYU) finished 14th in the West Coast (freshman of the year), Sam Hedquist (UVU) finished 29th in the WAC, Preston Johnson (Weber State) finished 45th in the Big Sky.

Boys - Matt Ward (State), Noah Stuart (Vita Course)

DXC Update - State Championships

Darts -
Even on years where it does not go as we hoped, I love the Sate Cross Country Championships--the excitement, the teamwork, the challenges, and the gutsy performances. We came away with a 2nd place finish for the girls and a 3rd for the boys. Both races were stacked full of talented individuals and strong teams. I want to thank every member of the TEAM for being there and putting so much emotion and passion into the race. Our TEAM was, once again, the loudest, most excited, and most supportive team on the course. You all did a great job with the body paint and the cheering. It was fun to watch.

The girls race was a close battle with American Fork. Aubrey was our top finisher in 4th place--it was her 4th All-State finish and her 4th time finishing in the top 4. She has had an incredible cross country career at Davis, and this one was very special considering her 2 major injuries over the past year. Ally came through big for us with a very strong 6th place finish. It's Ally's 2nd all-state performance (3rd in 2014), and it was an great display of toughness and grit. Grace, Jenna, and Miah fought very hard over the final half of the race to move up to 23rd, 25th, and 27th. I thought it was fitting that these 5 seniors were our top 5 finishers on the day. They have put so much into the program, and it was awesome to see them finish with such strong performances. We also had some gutsy performances from Abi and Madeline running in their first state championships and finishing in 32nd and 33rd. They gained some valuable experience that could really help us next year.
Davis Finishers
4. Aubrey Argyle - 18:06
6. Ally Geisler - 18:16
23. Grace Neuenschwander - 19:05
25. Jenna Connell - 19:11
27. Miah Weaver - 19:14
32. Abi Waddoups - 19:20
33. Madeline English - 19:27
Team Scores
1. American Fork - 68
2. Davis - 78
3. Lone Peak - 94
4. Weber - 108
5. Fremont - 146

The boys laid it on the line, but didn't quite get the finish we hoped for. They have had an amazing season - getting wins at BYU, Murray, Bob Firman, District, and Region - all with record, or close to record, TEAM efforts. But sometimes things go your way. It's hard when they don't, but it gives us opportunity. Opportunity to be more unified. Opportunity to work harder than we have before. And opportunity to bounce back. We worked very hard to prepare for the state championships, and we were ready to have a good day. It's difficult to pinpoint why, but it happened and now we are left in a position to see how we respond. It is a test of character and teamwork, and I am very grateful that we have another race to look forward to. Matt was our top finisher of the day in 12th, and we still had a decent 1-7 spread (:32). Camren and Seth also finished top 20 with 15th and 20th respectively. These are tough boys who are going to make adjustments and come back with a lot of determination and fire at Nike Regionals. #motivation #gethungry
Davis Finishers
12. Matt Ward - 15:47
15. Camren Todd - 15:53
20. Seth Stromberg - 15:58
21. Devin Jaster - 16:01
22. Jacob Vaughan - 16:08
26. Brigham Halverson - 16:19
27. Josh Peters - 16:19
Team Scores
1. American Fork - 42
2. Lone Peak - 75
3. Davis - 85
4. Westlake - 122
5. Riverton - 124

I hope you all enjoy your Fall Break. Try hard to have a mental and physical break and come back on Monday rested and excited to work hard for Nike Regionals. I will have the next month's training schedule ready to go. If you have been invited to NXR, I am expecting commitment, energy, and focus. Everyone on the TEAM is invited to join us for that great month of training.

Important Upcoming Dates:
Friday (11/4) - 12 Hour Run Fundraiser for NXR (Tentative)
Wednesday (11/9) - Pre-NXR at Layton Park - 4:00pm (for everyone)
Thursday (11/10) - TEAM Banquet @ TBA
Saturday (11/19) - Nike Regionals

Thank you all, once again, for a great regular season. It has been fun and memorable. Keep up the good work. Keep moving forward. Keep dreaming and believing.

DXC Update

Darts -
We are wrapping up the regular season with the State Championships on Wednesday. While there is more cross country and more running to follow, I am very proud of the TEAM commitment and improvement this season. Through the ups and downs, I feel that everyone has stayed very positive. We have grown as a TEAM, and it has been a very fun, rewarding season to be a part of. Let's finish strong together this week!

State Cross Country - The meet will take place at Sugarhouse Park on Wednesday (October 19th). The girls race at 2:00 and the boys race at 3:30. We want as many of our athletes there as possible - I understand a few of you might be going out of town for fall break - I hope the rest of you will make it to the state meet and be a part of our final TEAM race of the season. We also want as many parents and fans there as possible. The more positive support, the better. We will be stopping at Cafe Rio in Bountiful on the way home. Each of the athletes need to bring $5 to put toward their dinner--the team budget will cover the rest. Make sure to bring warm clothes - it looks like the high will be around 55-60. If you are taking the PSAT in the morning, please hurry to the buses. We really need to leave as close to 11:45 as possible.
Here is the schedule:
11:30 - Excused from school
11:45 - Buses Leave
2:00 - Girls 5A Championships (Aubrey, Ally, Jenna, Grace, Madeline, Miah, Abi)
3:30 - Boys 5A Championships (Josh, Matt, Seth, Jacob, Camren, Brigham, Devin)
5:30 - Dinner at Cafe Rio (bring $5)
7:00 - Back to the School

Fall Break - With the 3 days of fall break, each of you should take two days off and get in a distance run on one of the days. We will start working hard for NXR the following week.

Nike Regional Championships (NXR) - will be in Casa Grande, AZ on November 19th. The TEAM will be taking one bus down (50 athletes). We are looking at the possibility of adding 2 vehicles in order to take a total of 60 athletes. We will be leaving on Thursday (11/17) and coming back on Sunday (11/20). The cost will be $300. Some or all of that money can be earned through the 12 hour run-a-thon if you are willing to go out and get donations or pledges. We are staying at the Springhill Suites in Chandler, AZ on Friday and Saturday night. I have attached the invite list. The primary emphasis was placed on our final 2 big races (Bob Firman and Region) as well as some consideration to other races in the season. With our TEAM depth and commitment, it was the most difficult list we have ever had to make. I feel like so many more of you have worked hard and earned the trip, but it is the best we can do. If you are on the list, but will be unable to attend, please let me know ASAP and we will fill those spots with alternates. More details to come.

Important Upcoming Dates:
Wednesday (10/19) - State Championships
Friday (11/4) - 12 Hour Run Fundraiser for NXR (Tentative)
Wednesday (11/9) - Pre-NXR at Layton Park (for everyone)
Thursday (11/10) - TEAM Banquet @ TBA
Saturday (11/19) - Nike Regionals
Monday (7/31) - Friday (8/4) - 2017 Cross Country Camp (Tentative)

Bring a lot of positive energy to practice on Monday and Tuesday. It's a big week, and everyone on the TEAM can still contribute to our success at state.
Thanks!

DXC Update - Region Championships

Darts -
It has been an incredible season so far. Thank you all for putting so much work into it and making it a positive experience. The region championships were awesome and we only have 10 days until the state championships (10/19 at Sugarhouse Park). We would like the entire TEAM to continue to train together until we get to the state meet. Those not running at state should still show up to our practices the next 2 weeks with positive energy. The focus will obviously be on the group running at state, but it will give all of you an opportunity to train through the entire season. I am also hoping that most of you can come to the state championships. I know it is the final day of school before fall break, but I still expect everyone who can to be there to support the team and be part of our final race. That one is not just about the 14 running, but about all 160 of you and the work you have put in throughout the summer and the season. The 14 running will be out there representing all of DXC (past and present).

Region Championships - We saw some great things this past Friday at the Region Championships. There was toughness, there was unity, and there was some intelligent racing. I felt like every member of the TEAM was giving their all and staying in the moment. It was a very impressive afternoon for DXC. The boys won their 22nd straight region title and the girls won their 11th straight. Both girls and boys JV squads finished the regular season with an undefeated record - and both JV groups would have finished 2nd in the varsity races behind our varsity team. The full results for the meet can be found on www.runnercard.com (JV girls times are slightly off), and the Davis results are at the bottom of this email (with correct JV girls times).
The JV girls started us out with a dominating performance. We set a TEAM record by sweeping the top 28 places. We also set a TEAM record with 35 girls under 22:00 on the region course (old record was 31 last year). Three sophomores led the way with Maddie Johnson (19:29), Jennica Robinson (19:31) and Rosie Schraedel (19:34). They would not have run so fast without senior Haylee Downey setting a great pace for the group. Haylee went on to finish 4th. Our top freshman in the race was Tilly Vasquez in 11th with a very good freshman time of 20:32.
The JV boys kept us rolling, just topping the girls with a sweep of the top 31 spots. The top spot went to senior, Zach Moncur with 16:05. He was followed by Derek Thornton, Zach Jenkins, and McKay Treadwell. It was awesome to watch our top group work together and push each other - not just in this race, but throughout the season. We put 40 boys under 18:00 in the JV race (plus 10 more in the varsity). We also had a TEAM record for our fastest 5 freshmen boys - Jacob Halverson, Garrett DiReda, Jalen Anderton, Connor Finlinson, and Carson Coleman beat our freshmen team time record by over a minute. With our varsity group being pretty senior loaded, we are going to need our younger guys (juniors and sophomores included) to continue to step up over the next 365 days to put us in this position again.
The Varsity Girls put together their finest TEAM effort of the season. They have gotten stronger and stronger with every big performance this year, and we are rolling going into the state championships. Aubrey led the way with a strong time of 17:44 on a course that was running about 15 seconds slower than last year because of the soft, wet ground. It was Aubrey's 3rd Region Title (1st in 2013, 1st in 2014, 2nd in 2015, and 1st in 2016). Aubrey now has 4 of our top 8 times ever run on the region course. She has established herself as the most decorated DXC runner of all-time. Ally Geisler and Jenna Connell ran patient and calm over the first half and tough over the second half to pull up for 2nd and 3rd on the final lap of the race. Ally finished with 18:12 and Jenna was 18:29. Madeline stepped up HUGE for us with a 5th place finish in 18:37 and Grace rounded out our top 5 with 18:40, giving us a :56 spread for 1-5 (at Bob Firman we were :81). We had very tough performances from Abi, Alicia, and Miah, finishing 7-8-9 as well. Giving us 8 of the top 9 runners in the race.
The Varsity Boys closed out the day with a monster performance. We ran as a tight pack through the first 2 miles of the race, and finished with a very tight :24 spread for 1-7. Our depth has been our biggest strength this season, and it showed as the boys finished 2nd through 9th in the race to win with 20 points. We ran our #2 All-Time team time - only behind last year's amazing performance (on a course that was in slightly better conditions). Josh led the way with a near victory in 15:13 - only :01 behind Leatham. Josh's improvement over the past few years is definitely noteworthy - he ran 18:26 as a freshman. Seth had a "Logan-esque" finish to place 3rd in 15:23. Matt and Jacob came in right together for 4-5, and our top 7 was rounded out with Camren, Brigham, and Devin all running within a second of each other for 6-7-8. Frasier put together a valiant effort as well for 9th. This group of seniors (8 of our top 9) have really grown and improved. It has been fun watching them come together to create one of the best DXC teams in history. We still have a lot of unfinished business, but I am loving the way they get after it.

I hope you were all inspired from the Region Championships and from other races this season. There are more races to come and more opportunities to push your limits and find your greatness - our remaining cross country work this year, indoor and outdoor track, and next year's cross country season. I would love to see all of you coming back really catch fire and see what we can accomplish over the next year. Just as there were this year, I am expecting surprises and jumps from many of you! If you were not satisfied with this race or this season, keep at it! Stay positive, stay focused and determined, and keep following your dreams and goals.

DXC Update - Nichols Race

Darts -
I hope you have all had a relaxing weekend, full of rest and recovery - and I hope you all know how important it is to take breaks and take your recovery seriously. I just got home from a weekend in St. George. We went down for the marathon. While I didn't get to run (knee injury), it was pretty cool to watch the race and see everyone working hard to make it to the finish line. I hope that every last one of you will stick with running after you are done with high school. There is nothing quite like finishing a marathon--and I believe everyone should have the experience at least once in their life. By the way, Coach Timothy did a great job - he ran 2:46.30 and finished as the 51st in a race of 5400. It was his PR by 7 minutes. We also got to see Sydney Zaugg and Natalie Olsen finish their first marathons (3rd and 4th in their divisions). Very Cool!

Davis Meet - Although it was a quick turnaround after the Bob Firman meet, we looked strong at the meet at Nichols Park. Josh Christiansen ran a great race to win the boys JV, followed closely by Porter Van Drimmelen. Our boys varsity group ran as a pack and finished within :01 of each other between 4th and 11th place. Jennica Robinson pulled away for the victory in the girls JV. Maddie Johnson and Sara Williams rounded out the top 3. The girls varsity also ran in a tight group. Aubrey closed strong the last mile for 2nd and our group finished within :01 for 4th-8th. You can see the full results on the blog - www.davisxc.blogspot.com

This Week -
We have a great week in front of us! I am excited about the cooler weather in the forecast, and I am pumped to see you all perform at the region championships on Friday. We have worked hard for this, and I want to see everyone of you giving your very best efforts in the final full TEAM race of the year. Think about all the work you have done--the long runs, the intervals, the hills, the morning runs, the tempo runs, the track work, and especially the races. Take confidence from the work you have put in and the experience you have gained. Their is no reason not to have a great week and a strong final race.
Monday - Workout at Layton Park on the region course (9th graders can still meet us at Davis and we will go over)
Tuesday - Varsity is going to run the state course @ Sugarhouse (last day possible); Distance run for all else.
