Nike Nationals - Portland, OR

The Boys Finished 11th at the Nike Nationals!!!!
Great races by all seven boys - Austin, Cromar, Brad, Preston, Joe, Adam, and Matt - all ran like studs in the mud. The course was tough, but they gave great efforts - congrats to each of them for getting here and for working so hard through the race. Also - congrats to Shea for her 60th place finish as an individual - also a very strong performance on a tough course.
Full update with pictures later.

Nike Regionals Update

Darts -
It is nice to be home and back in school after a long ride home yesterday (and a nice 3 1/2 hour delay in Beaver). The Arizona trip was a huge success. Not only did we race well, but we had a lot of fun together. Plus you were all very well behaved (thanks). And I hope you came home with some great memories and some motivation to run well in track and in cross country next year. The end of a season is always kind of bitter-sweet.

Overall we had 47 people in the 4 races. Out of those 47, we had 36 PRs. I can't ask for much better as a coach. It seemed like all of you gave great efforts in the races - that all of you ran with confidence and with purpose - and that we ran as a TEAM. I went away completely satisfied with the work we have done and with the results. It is nice for me to look back over the past year and see how far we have come. I end the season very proud of your accomplishments because we worked so hard to get them.
The varsity boys knew that it would take a strong race to finish in the top 2 and get an automatic berth to the Nike Nationals. We were watching American Fork, Albuquerque, and Pine View closely. We were really excited at the end of the race as we saw that we had finished well in front of Albuquerque and Pine View, but Fort Collins snuck up and grabbed the 2nd spot - beating us by only 5 points (American Fork finished 1st). We still have a great chance of getting one of the four at-large invites for the 9 regions. We won't know until Sunday afternoon (after the other regionals are completed). All we can do now is realize we worked our hardest and raced our best and just hope that it was enough to get us the invite. I feel good about it, but it will be hard to really celebrate until we find out on Sunday. All 7 of the boys in the varsity race finished with 5k prs. We were lead by a huge race from Austin Neuner. He finished in 7th place overall (qualifying as an individual for the Nike Nationals). Neuner was only 12 seconds out of 2nd place (and only 5 seconds off of A.F.s number 1). From there we had a :30 spread for 1-5: Joe came through in the big race again, Brad ran a tough race right through, Brayden was the 4th best sophomore in the entire race, Preston was the 5th fastest in the race, and Adam and Matt came through with great races - which hopefully earned them another race as their final races. Adam and Matt ended up as the fastest #6 and #7 runners in the race. We figured that if they had scored 7 runners, we would have won (beating A.F. by 10 points). It may have been the best performance by a Davis TEAM in the history of DXC.

The boys JV team actually won the open race against many other varsity teams. We were lead by a very gutsy race from senior Zach Schofield. Skylar Williams finished 16:41 and was the 2nd best freshman in the entire meet. Phillip Baker ran a huge pr of 16:57 to finish as our 3rd man. Hayden Hansen, Logan Wood, Alex Hedquist, and Jackson Sagers rounded out our top 7 (all finishing in the top 57 of the two open races combined). After Zach, all 6 of our top 7 return next year. We will definitely be going after nationals again. We also had good PRs from Andrew Aposhian, Isaac Clouse, and Nick Mason.

Although the outcome of the girls race was not exactly what we had hoped for, I don't think I could have asked for stronger efforts. I have continuously been amazed and surprised by what our girls' TEAM has accomplished this year. We have overcome illness, injury, and other challenges, and we have improved so much over the past few months. We have to be satisfied with what we have accomplished this year. We were state champions - but even more importantly, we learned to race as a TEAM and work as a TEAM toward something great. You girls have supported each other and encouraged each other, and I am very happy with everything you have done - from your attitudes to your performances. I said this before the race - that you are champions no matter what happens. You went out and gave your very all - and even though we didn't finish like we had hoped, you still showed what you are made of. Great job all season giving your very best and making it through the ups and downs. It will be hard to lose 5 seniors on that varsity group and a bunch more who have lead our JV runners as well. We have a great young group of runners, but our seniors this year will be almost irreplaceable. I hope you seniors know how amazing you are - I hope you know how much we all love you and will miss you.
4. 17:52 Shea Martinez- qualified for Nationals as an individual - Hopefully she will have 7 boys to escort her up to Portland. Good luck Shea! This was also the single fastest cross country 5k that a Davis female runner has ever run.

Our JV girls showed a lot of guts as they went out aggressive and held on for many PRs. There were some good surprises in this race, and it will be nice to have 7 of our top 8 coming back and pushing for varsity spots next year. Great job racing with positive attitudes. I though it was awesome that every one of our seniors in this race ended their careers with a PR for 5k.

What's Next?
We are now taking a much deserved break for the body and the mind. I want you to stay away from running this week (through Thanksgiving weekend). Next week you can start up with a few short runs (3-6 miles) anywhere from 1-4 times during the week (I am going to leave that to your individual discretion based on how much rest you think you need). You are welcome to pick some days, and then meet in my room after school to go out for a run in small or big groups. Try to stay active and to not be lazy. Try not to think too much about running - instead, give yourself a rest and come back refreshed, excited, and ready to work for some prs in indoor and outdoor track. We will try to build up our distance in December and January - adding in more and more speed work as we go. You might come back from these 2 weeks a little out of shape, that is to be expected, but we will build you back up stronger and faster than ever before.

The indoor track meeting will be on Tuesday, December 7th at 2:45 in the auditorium or the cafeteria. We will go for a distance run on Monday, December 6th after school (meet in my room).

Shea and the boys (if they all make it) will be racing in Portland on December 4th. If you would like more details about that race, email me with questions. I will be sending out a separate email with information for those athletes and their parents in the next day or so.

Thanks for everything - it has been a great season - one that I will always fondly remember. Each one of you contributed in some way to the greatness of the TEAM - thank you for being a part of DXC. See you around.

Cross Country Update - State Championships

Darts -
At the end of every cross country season I look back and think about what made the season memorable. We have had some very special years as a Davis XC program. I think I will remember this season as a season of determination and TEAM work. We have worked extremely hard for the things we were able to accomplish. We set some pretty high TEAM goals throughout the summer and we have really stayed focused as a TEAM as we have worked for our goals. I can't say enough about how proud I am of our TEAM and the season we have had. I will also remember this season for all of the fun times we have had - summer runs, high altitude camp, the Bob Firman trip, the incredibly hard but 'fun' workouts, the parties in my classroom everyday, the games we've played, and races we've run. I have enjoyed the ups and the downs of this season - our victories and our defeats. I have enjoyed watching each of you face your individual challenges. We have seen so many improvements and accomplishments this season. I have enjoyed your company on runs, on bus rides, and in my classroom (even when I am not always the easiest person to ask questions to). We are blessed to have each other as a TEAM. We have made some great friendships - and I think we have learned a lot from one another. This is what DXC is all about - hard work, being a TEAM, having fun, and making ourselves as fast as possible. It has been a pleasure to be a part of. This is a season I will always remember with joy and satisfaction. Thank you all so much for your sacrifices, for your commitment, for your patience, for your friendship, for your trust, and for your passion for running.

State Championships - What an awesome meet to be a part of. From the racing to the cheering, we were a TEAM. It was so cool to see the sea of brown and gold running across the park to cheer on their teammates. We executed the cheering plan with perfection - and we ran with heart and determination.
All of the hard work paid off for the girls - they ran a tough race and ended up as STATE CHAMPIONS! I was so impressed with how hard the girls fought for it. Shea made a strong move just after the mile and hung on to finish as the individual champion (only the 3rd ever from Davis). She has really learned to push herself and to go after her best. Meghan ran a patient, experienced race moving up from around 12th place to finish 3rd - nearly pulling off the 1-2 finish. It is Meg's 3rd time in the top 3, and her 3rd time with a TEAM title. What an incredible cross country career she is finishing up. She has carried our TEAM and has been so tough and consistent for the past 4 years. Our pack of 5 worked very well together through the first half of the race. I liked how Madi made sure we stayed close enough, then Tessa pushed us hard through the middle, then Anni finished with a monster last 400 meters. They definitely got the job done. I have said from the start that our success will depend on our 3-7 runners. They really came through for us at the state meet. Anni had to dig deep, but she pulled out one of her tremendous finishes for 17th place. Tessa ran with a lot of courage, moving her way up through the pack in the middle to finish 20th. Joanna stayed strong through the race to really help us out as the #5 and to finish in 26th. We are so happy that she luckily moved into the Davis boundaries - she brings so much positive energy to the TEAM. Madi showed once again that she is truly a cross country runner (and not just a sprinter) with a great race to finish 32nd and beat every other team's #5. And Abby ran extremely tough even though she picked up a cold this week. In the middle of the race we were encouraging her to hang in there and finish in front of Skyline's number 5 to help us out. Abby gave her very all straight to the finish and actually pulled away from the Skyline girl. I was so proud of all the girls - not just for their races, but for what they each bring to our TEAM every day. They are all so strong and are all great examples and leaders. I thought it was extra special that we won the state title with 5 seniors running.
The boys had a goal to be the best Davis TEAM in history. To do so, we had to beat the 2002 team who ran 81:31 for the top 5. That team won the state title by 40 points. We ran a TEAM record team time of 81:07 - the 7th best time in the history of the course (since 1998). Coming in 2nd place to an American Fork team that is most likely the best team in the state's history is nothing to be disappointed in. I like how we were focused on doing our best - and that we went out and gave our all. I know that we can run even better - and that we are going to run even better in 4 weeks, but I am extremely proud of how far we have come over the past 5 months. We have great seniors leading us on both varsity and JV, and we have a solid group of young runners who are learning how to push themselves and run as a TEAM. The past few years have set us up, the current TEAM is raising the bar, and the future continues to look bright. Austin Neuner put himself right in the lead pack, and had to really kick to go from 11th to 9th in the final 50 meters and get an all-state spot (to go along with his academic all-state). Neuner's time was the 4th best ever from Davis. Brayden Cromar had another monster finish to move all the way up to 12th and finish as the top sophomore in 5A and the top sophomore in our team's history. Joe White and Brad Nye moved well together in the middle of the race. From the half way point to the finish, they were not passed by a single runner. They were determined to redeem themselves from last year - and I think they accomplished it. Joe finished strong in 15th and Brad was not far behind in 18th. Preston Johnson may not have been satisfied with his 27th place finish, but his time was the 2nd fastest sophomore time from 5A, and Preston fought hard like he has all summer and all season. Preston has taught us all what hard work can do. He is the toughest, hardest working kid I have ever coached. And I think the only kid who ran at the state meet and then came home and did a frustration workout on the track - already getting ready for the next race. Adam Mathias ran an incredible last mile to move up and finish 40th in the race. He has improved so much from the scrawny little sophomore from 2 years ago - he is now the scrawny, fast, senior I knew he could become. And Skylar Williams ran a gutsy race to finish 42nd - he was the fastest freshman from any division and the fastest freshman to ever run at state for Davis. All 7 of our boys finished in the top 10 finishers from our region. I can't tell you how much I love these boys and what they stand for. They are champions in every sense of the word.

The girls finish the season as STATE CHAMPS, Region Champs, and District Champs. The JV Girls went undefeated. The boys finish as STATE RUNNER-UP, Region Champs, and District Champs and have proven themselves as the best ever Davis TEAM with team time records at all 3 championships. The JV boys also finish the season undefeated. Based on our region results, I think the JV boys would have had a shot at top 5 in the state.

What's Next?
Tomorrow (Friday) - TEAM Pictures and uniform turn in (even though it is probably too late once you finally read this).
Saturday - Get in an easy long run on your own (anywhere from 5 to 10 miles) - enjoy it - October is the BEST time of year for morning runs.
Monday - NXN Training begins - be in my classroom after school at 2:45. If you want to go to Nike with us, you have to be 100% committed over the next 4 weeks. If we are going to have a shot at qualifying, and if you want to have a shot at a PR on a fast course, we are going to have to really work for it for 3 weeks - and then be perfectly ready the week of the race. I really believe both TEAMs have a shot at Portland (Nationals) - but it is going to take perfect preparation and a continued commitment to being our best. We will also have to continue to come together as a TEAM. I should have the workout schedule ready to give you by tomorrow (Friday). Let's really get after it!
Thursday, November 4 - TEAM BANQUET - place and time TBA.
Thursday - Sunday, November 18-21 - NIKE Regionals - Mesa, AZ.

Thanks again for a tremendous season - I am honored to be your coach.

Cross Country Update - Region Champs!!

Darts -
The region cross country meet showed what DXC is all about: racing hard and racing as a TEAM. I was so pleased with the desire and the determination that you all brought to the race. It was truly one of the best meets in the history of Davis Cross Country. The TEAM wins gave us 15 straight region titles for the boys and 5 straight for the girls. We ran the fastest TEAM times (top 5 times combined) in the history of the course, and we had a ton of PRs. Most importantly, the efforts were tough, and the TEAM had a lot of fun racing and supporting their TEAMmates.
The girls were led by Shea Martinez who set a course record of 18:06 on her way to being region champion. We had 5 more girls finish in the top 10 (All-Region) including Meghan, Anni, Tessa, Abby, and Madi - all 5 are seniors and have worked hard to get to where they are today. I was so proud of our senior class this season and all of the leadership they provided. Our TEAM truly had chemistry this year which has helped us to become our very best. I am really going to miss this group. Joanna finished in 11th - just off of all-region, and Nalany was 13th (running as one of our non-scoring athletes). The varsity girls ran a combined TEAM time of 1:34.07 (averaging 18:49). It broke the old record of 1:34.24 by the 2002 Davis team. In the JV race, we did something that the Davis girls have never done - we swept the top 10. Last year we finished 1-9 and almost got it. The boys have done it a few times, but the girls had never swept. Not only did we get the top 10 in the girls JV race, we finished 1-17. It was a true show of dominance, and it is all because of hard work and dedication to getting better through the summer and through the season. Sophomore Emily Hammond led the way with 20:08 and she was followed closely by Janice and Sierra. Our seniors fought hard for us in the JV race as well - led by Jessica, Danna, Tracey, and Julia. They have all been such good examples of hard work and love for running. We are lucky to have some good young runners as well, with 12 of the the top 17 in the JV race coming back.
It was nice to have Austin Neuner running healthy and strong again in the boys race. He led the way with a region title in a time of 15:33. It is the fastest that anyone has run on the course since 2006, and it is the 6th fastest time ever run on the course. Austin was followed closely by fellow senior Joe White who finished 2nd in 15:41 (All-time #9). Joe made a strong move over the 2nd half of the race to move up into the #2 spot. Brayden Cromar (sophomore) rounded out our 1-2-3 sweep with a strong finish as well. He took off with about 600m to go, and moved from 5th to 3rd. His time of 15:47 is #12 time ever run on the course and is the sophomore record for the course (old record 16:06 by Seth Gutzwiller). Preston Johnson, also a sophomore, ran 15:57 to finish 6th, and Brad Nye was 16:01 to finish 7th. The top 5 times combined to 1:18.59 to give us the TEAM time record (average of 15:48). It is a record we will be going after again next year. Freshman Skylar Williams had a monster kick to finish all-region with a time of 16:06 - it shattered the freshman record (also by Gutz at 16:23). Our varsity group was rounded out by Adam Mathias, Matt Munns, Matt Swanson, and Logan Wood. This race was the first time this season that our seniors beat our underclassmen in a dual meet score (27-29). The seniors definitely deserve it. They are a group that has taken our TEAM to the next level. Through their hard work, competitiveness, and determination, these boys have become a tough, fast TEAM. The JV boys finished the season undefeated with a 1-8 sweep and perfect score of 15. Zach Schofield was the individual champion, followed by 3 sophomores: Jackson, Alex, and Hayden. Austin Allred had a great race for 5th, and Spencer Jones, Phillip Baker, and Taylor Goldsberry rounded out our sweep. Our seniors have been outstanding, and we return 11 of our top 18 runners.
Coming up we have our biggest test of the season at the state meet. The boys (who are currently ranked #7 in the U.S.) are going up against an incredibly strong American Fork team (ranked #2 in the U.S.). We are going to be focusing on ourselves - running our strongest race. The girls (currently ranked #19 in the U.S.) are going to have their hands full with some tough young teams from Skyline and Alta. We need to continue to prepare ourselves and have our strongest TEAM races. We will need all of the TEAM, parent, and alumni support that we can get at the state meet on Wednesday. Not only will we be racing against teams in our own division, but we will also be aiming to do our best in the combined division results (so times become very important).

Coming Up:
Varsity Dinner - for state athletes and alternates - at Abby's house on Monday at 6:00pm
State Cross Country Championships - Wednesday (Oct 20th) at Sugarhouse Park. Girls race at 2:30 pm, and the boys race at 4:00 pm (this is a change from last year - the schedule will go 3A-4A-5A girls then 3A-4A-5A boys)
TEAM Pictures - Friday after school. Bring your uniforms and your DXC shirts (long sleeve and short sleeve).

Austin Neuner - back with a victory
