It was a busy (and very successful) week. The TEAM was represented in 10 different races between Pre-Region and USU - we finished with nine 1st place TEAM finishes and one 2nd place finish. We have had a very strong start to the season - we are working hard, we are growing more unified with each practice and each race, we are seeing improvement in our mental toughness, and we are learning how to race. However, we still have a lot of season in front of us. We will continue to face challenges and we need to stay hungry and focused over the next few weeks. I consider this next 4 weeks to be the 'middle' of the season. We can still see a lot of growth and a lot of improvement. We hope to continue to see surprises this next week with our District Championship and the BYU Invitational.
Pre-Region - I wish I had more time to summarize Pre-Region on Tuesday. It was a great race for our TEAM. We had 8 of the top 9 in the boys varsity - led by Stokton Smith with the win (tying the course record) and Josh Ward just :02 back. We narrowly missed the course team time record (top 5 combined) by just :05. The JV boys placed 27 out of the top 30 runners and finished with a perfect score (15 points) for the victory. Josh Peters ran away with the individual title in a very strong effort. The girls varsity put 9 runners in the top 14 (all at 13:00 or faster), and also ran the 2nd fastest team time in history. Aubrey Argyle got the individual title - leading from start to finish - with 11:45 (the #2 all-time mark on the course). The girls JV also ended with a perfect score (15) and put 20 runners in the top 25. Sydney Zaugg ran tough for the individual win with 13:22. You can see the full results on the blog - www.davisxc.blogspot.com
USU Invite - We bounced back from a solid effort on Tuesday to face about 25 teams at the Utah State Invitational in Logan on Friday afternoon. We had never raced at USU before, but everyone did very well for the first time on the course. It ended up measuring close to 3.0 miles, even though we had heard it was going to be longer. The TEAMs came away with victories in 5 of the 6 races and a strong 2nd place in the girls rookie race. You can see the Davis results at the bottom of this email, and the full results at www.runnercard.com
The rookie girls were led by Jenna Connell who finished 2nd with 21:36 in just her 3rd ever cross country race. Our top 5 were rounded out by Brylie Robinson, Bailey Cipriano, Madeline English, and Kate Stuart. Our young girls are really working hard and showing progress.
The rookie boys race was a lot of fun to watch. Seth Stromberg and Daniel Harris moved into the lead about 1 mile into the race and didn't look back. They ran stride for stride all the way to the finish line and broke the line hand in hand. The two of them didn't realize it is against high school rules to cross holding hands in the air (probably the worst rule ever made) - and luckily the officials let them keep the victory. It was a great showing of teamwork and unselfishness. Our young boys cleaned up with 12 of the top 28 places in the race #TheFutureLooksBright
The JV girls picked up the victory with a strong TEAM effort as well. We didn't have an individual in the top 5, but we had 8 in the top 23 runners. Emmaline Huntzinger ran tough and was our top finisher in 20:11 - we are happy to have Emmaline on the team, and she is doing very well adjusting to a new school and a new TEAM. We were also excited to have Alex Tanner racing again this week - she looked tough in both races after coming back from an ankle injury.
The JV boys race was highlighted by an early breakaway from Matt Ward. He led our group through the final 2.5 miles of the race and finished with 16:32. Matt was the 8th fastest sophomore in all the races combined and was followed closely by another sophomore teammate, Josh Peters. The JV boys had our most dominating performance of the day with 16 of the top 25 runners. They won with a score of 18. Bonneville was 2nd with 71.
The Varsity Girls ran smart and patient from the start. Aubrey Argyle ended up with the victory by 32 seconds - but didn't start her move until after a mile into the race. She ran solo the rest of the way and pulled away hard over the final mile. Aubs finished with a course record of 17:48. We did very well with our 'pack' running over the first half of the race. The next 5 girls were around 10th place at the mile and moved up as a pack to finish 2-4-7-10. They ran very tough through the middle and then very gutsy over the final mile. Ally had a great finish for 2nd in 18:20 and Miah was 4th in 18:23 - giving us 3 sophomores in the top 4 of the race. Our team score was 24 points - 2nd place was Ogden with 103.
The Varsity Boys also looked strong in the final race of the evening. Josh Ward moved hard over the 2nd half of the race - passing most of the runners in the chase pack (behind Mantz) and then throwing it down over the final 800 for a 3rd place finish in 15:14. Stokton was 5th in 15:25, and Logan McKay kicked hard for a top 10 finish in 15:50. The boys scored 46 to beat two very solid teams - Lehi (97) and Ogden (123).

Parents Night - I would like to thank all of you who made it out to parents night on Thursday. We had a great presentation from ultramarathoner Jared Campbell (you can Google how amazing he is). Thanks to Tony Peters for setting it up. Jared gave some great insight into staying positive and being optimistic through challenges (injuries, bad weather, tough courses, etc). He talked about embracing adversity and about never being afraid to fail. It was very fascinating to hear of his running adventures.
T-Shirts - Have been ordered; you can now pay in the office or online ($10 per shirt).
Bob Firman Invitational - I have attached the Bob Firman Invite list. Please let me know if you have any questions. I have been known to accidentally overlook someone - so if you feel that is the case, please don't be afraid to say something. It is always tough to narrow down our numbers to one busload - it seems to be especially tough this year and I wish I could take more of you. I looked at season performance and summer practice attendance and mileage in making the decisions. I went pretty deep on the alternates list - if there are any parents from that list who are interested in going up, please contact me and we might be able to work out some way to get some of those kids up to Boise. I will send out more details about Bob Firman soon. I did hand out the itineraries on Thursday night and have extras if your son/daughter would like to grab one on Monday.

~ Coach Talley
Brad's Corner
If there is one thing that is a constant in any great race I ran it was that I was running with purpose. I had a goal, and a plan to achieve it.
If I went into a race just trying to run hard, I never raced great. I guarantee no World Record or Gold Medal was achieved when that runner didn't have that purpose going into that race. Runners plan months, or even a year in advance to go after a World Record. And ever single long run, interval session, easy day and day off has purpose. They are not just winging it.
What is your purpose? Why are you running? What do you want to achieve? I know, personally, my running never really took off until I truly trained and raced with purpose.
Know why you are doing a long run. When your intervals get tough, smile, knowing these have a purpose. Don't fear tough workouts! Welcome them knowing the next race when every single runner is hurting you are going to work harder because you've done the work. Welcome that part of the race. You are ready for it!
I would like to challenge each of you to find your purpose, your goal, or your reason to run. Make every single workout count. You are a part of the best program in the country. If you race and train with purpose you will be a better runner than you have ever imagined.
