DXC Update - 9/28
Darts -
Bob Firman Summary - It was a sweet weekend for us up in Boise at the Bob Firman Invitational. I always look forward to this trip because we see some tough competition from all Utah and the Northwest, the course is challenging but fast, and it is a great test to see the progress we have made through the first half of the season. This year was probably our most successful year. We swept the boys and girls Elite races for the first time ever, and we added a win in the varsity division 1 boys race, two JV team wins, and a TON of great PRs and season bests. Conditions were near perfect, and it was a great day to run fast.
We really had a fantastic day right from the beginning. The boys who ran in the division 1 varsity race (our #8-14) pulled off a major win against primarily varsity teams. There were 41 teams in the race, so it was a bit crowded through the first half, but our guys stayed patient and smart and then flew through the pack over the second loop. Our biggest move came from Bryce Ferguson who was close to 40th at the mile and fought all the way up to 8th by the finish. Our other scorers included Solomon (22nd), Britton (24th), Matt (30th) and Josh Peters (31st). We ended only 3 points ahead of 2nd and 11 points ahead of 3rd - and those points all came in the final half mile of the race as we finished like animals.
In the elite girls race, we were once again facing a strong American Fork team and the best teams from Idaho (Couer D'Alene and Boise), plus there were some of the best individuals in the western U.S. We got out well, stayed patient the first lap, and hung tough on the second lap to get the victory. It is our 3rd Bob Firman title in a row. The girls also ended up with a team time course record of 92:53 (beating last year's time of 93:08). Aubrey led the way with a 3rd place finish - she ran a team record for the course in 17:43. Ally Geisler also ran tough and moved up from 17th to 9th in the final mile of the race. Miah, Tatum, and Sam rounded out our top 5 and all finished in the top 27 of the race.
The boys followed up with a victory in the elite varsity. It was our first Bob Firman win since 2010. We had to really fight for the win with a very strong Timpanogos team. Both Stokton and Josh finished with times under our team record. They finished 6th and 7th in 15:32 and 15:33 (the old team record was 15:36 by Jared Ward). Logan MacKay picked off a ton of runners over the final mile to move up to 12th (15:52), and Colton had a strong race for 21st (16:00). Our sophomore studs (Frasier and Camren) finished 40th and 43rd to round out our top 6. They're times of 16:23 and 16:27 were the #2 and #3 Davis times ever on the course for sophomores. All combined we ran a team time record of 79:22 (our old record was 81:38 from 2010).
The division 1 girls ran against a very competitive field and pulled off a strong 6th place finish - getting beat by some good varsity teams. We were led by Kaitlyn Datwyler in 19:51 and Emmaline Huntzinger in 20:11. Sophomores Sydnee Rayl and Jenna Connell were our 3rd and 4th finishers in 20:44 and 20:45.
Our boys JV runners completely dominated once again. We finished with the top 11 places and 16 of the top 22 places. Jacob Vaughan, Josh Christiansen, and Kelton Johnson led a pack of brown and gold with 16 boys under 18:00 in the JV race (with only 2 seniors in the group). I would argue that our JV squad could quite possibly be the fastest, deepest group in the U.S. They had a perfect score for the 4th time this season (out of 6 meets). In fact, if we could have put our 3rd squad (these runners from the Bob Firman JV) into the small school varsity race at Bob Firman - they would have pulled off a first place and another Nike Shoe trophy.
The girls JV (for us numbers 15-24) also pulled off a victory - giving us 5 out of 6 for the day. Madeline English ran very tough for 2nd place in 21:14, and Tiahna Cipriano came through with a 4th place finish. Jordan Barnett, Alex Tanner, and Sara Williams rounded out our top 5, and all finished in the top 20 in the race.
It was definitely a fun trip with a lot of TEAM success. Thank you for being so well behaved and for representing Davis Cross Country in such a positive way. I also want to thank the parents who were up there and the parents who provided the opportunity for more athletes. We have such a great support group in our program. THANKS!!
I hope that each of you came home with some motivation to finish the season strong. It is crazy that the region championships are two weeks from tomorrow.
Our biggest improvements from 1 year ago came from Ally G (85 seconds), Kaity Datwyler (73 seconds), Sam Hedquist (71 seconds), Josh Peters (173 seconds), Dallin Kitchen (138 seconds), Zach Moncur (119 seconds), Josh Christiansen (110 seconds), Jake Welling (105 seconds), Jason Lang (103 seconds), and Bryce Ferguson (101 seconds).
Davis Open Region Meet: We are hosting an open region meet this Wednesday (October 1). It has been at Barnes Park in the past, but this year we are going to try our new course at Nichols Park. The races will begin on the upper fields (baseball fields) and will go down into the hollow for the middle and the end will be back up on the fields. It will not be as spectator friendly as Barnes, but it will be a lot of fun for the athletes to race. It is kind of a trial run for the course. You will all be excused from school at 1:45 - and will be expected to be up to Nichols Park by 2:15. We are not taking a bus. You will need to find your own ride. I am looking for some parent volunteers to help with the course directions during the race. Please let me know if you would like to help.

DXC Update - 9/21
Darts & Parents -
While we didn't have any races this past week, it was still a very
strong week for our TEAM. I felt like we got physically and mentally
stronger each day. It was the kind of week we needed at this point of
the season, and I hope that each of you are fired
up going into our second half. I hope that each of you are determined
to have your best races still to come. We have some very fun races in
front of us over the next 4 1/2 weeks (Bob Firman, our home meet,
Region, and State).
So much of what we do is about hard work, and this week really
captured what you were capable of accomplishing. Tuesday was one of the
hottest days of the year for us. We tried to cool it off a bit by
running in Nichols Hollow - but it was still a very
challenging day. I love the way you ran hard and pushed each other
through the workout. It took a lot of toughness to run the 2nd set hard
and then come back and run even faster on the 4 x 2:00. I hope that is
one of the workouts you remember when think back
about all the hard work you have done this season. Thursday was one of
my favorite workouts of the year so far. We rarely get the chance to be
on the track during cross country, but every time we do, I love seeing
the excitement and the energy that each group
brings to finishing the workouts together. I know it was a hard workout
- but we nailed it as a TEAM. It should give you some confidence as we
go forward. I want to see each of you racing the rest of the season with
CONFIDENCE, UNITY, HEART, PURPOSE, and even
a bit of SWAG - knowing we have worked harder than anyone else. When we
stand on any starting line, we should know we are the toughest, most
prepared TEAM on the course. Believe in yourselves. Believe in your
coaches. Believe in your teammates.
Athletes of the Week - Even though we didn't race, I wanted
to choose a few of you who have been great examples of hard work and
commitment through the summer and the season:
Brandon Peters
Solomon Twitchell
Sydney Zaugg
Madi Meyer
Bob Firman - A slight change in
the itinerary - we will be leaving the high school at 7:15 instead of
6:45. You are welcome to show up around 6:45-7:00 to load up and get
your seats on the bus.
We will have a meeting for those going
to Bob Firman after we run on Thursday. Please make sure you can be at
the meeting. We will go over any last minute instructions. Parents -
please let me know if you have any questions.
The fines have been entered on your accounts - please try to pay sometime this week before the trip.
Open Region Meet at Layton -
Those of you who are not racing at Bob Firman WILL get a chance to race
this week. We are going to go to the Open Region Meet at Layton Park on
Wednesday. You will be excused at 1:45 - the
bus will leave at 2:00. The boys will run in the JV race at 3:30. There
is only one girls race at 4:00. We will go over the other details at
practice on Monday and Tuesday.
T-Shirts - I know most of you
picked up your t-shirts order. Please make sure to pay the money that
has been submitted on your school accounts. If you didn't get your
shirt(s), they are in my classroom. If we ran out
of your size, the 2nd order should come in early next week.

Brad's Corner: My Dad used to have a saying
about racing hard at the end if a race: "You never know when the guy in
front if you is going to trip." What he meant was keep racing for the
guy in front of you because if they crash and
burn you need to be in position to capitalize on it. "If you're not
there they can still get up and win." He said.
I still think about that at the end of races. And the first time someone went down I thought: "Holy crap! It happened." (Note: Obviously the point was not to hope you beat runners because they trip or pass out.)
My dad knew how to race. He taught me to race to win. Never race to "Not get caught". Late in a race when you're hurting, runners tend to try and "not get caught". This mind set hurts you. If you are racing to catch someone ahead of you out racing the people behind you takes care of itself. Racing to "not get caught" leaves you giving the bare minimum to win. Whenever I see a runner looking behind them late in a race I tells me they are dying hard. I know they are merely running to "not get caught". It's like blood in the water.
I challenge each of you, forever more, late in your races to race to beat people. Never race to "not get caught".

DXC Update - 9/14 - BYU and District Champs
Darts -
It
was another busy week - and one of the most successful weeks for Davis
Cross Country that I can remember. Just like last week, we were in a
total of 10 races (JV and Varsity combined)
between the 2 meets this week. We finished a perfect 10-0 as a team.
The district meet was highlighted by some awesome TEAM efforts in each
of the 4 races, and we showed a lot of toughness at the BYU Invite
against some of the best competition in Utah.
District Championships:
We nearly pulled off a perfect score in all 4 races at the district
championships. The JV girls had the most dominating performance of the
day by taking
the top 12 spots. We were led by Rachel Johnson (19:09) and Jenna
Connell (19:14). Some of our biggest improvements came from Jordan
Barnett, Malaree Wood, and Julia Haerle. In the boys JV race, we
continued to show our depth with 29 of the top 36 runners.
We were led by Britton Porter (15:16) and Bryce Ferguson (15:17). Our
biggest improvements came from Zach Moncur, Brigham Halverson, and Zach
Jenkins. Both Varsity races were a great display of teamwork. The girls
finished 1-5 with a virtual tie for first
from Tatum Beard, Miah Weaver, Aubrey Argyle, and Ally Geisler - all 4
of them finished with a time of 17:03. Sam Hedquist was not far behind
with 17:09. The boys also ran together and finished with a 2 second
spread for 1-5. Stokton Smith got the individual
title in 14:31, Josh Ward was 2nd in 14:32, and Colton Rimann, Logan
MacKay, and Camren Todd came in together at 14:33 for 4th-6th. You can
find the full results on the blog - www.davisxc.blogspot.com
BYU Invite:
We had a lot of fun at the BYU Invite yesterday. I was very pleased
with the enthusiasm, unity, and TEAM support that I saw throughout the
day. In a competitive meet (over 30 teams represented), we finished 1st
in the team scores in each of the 6 races
- I believe that is the first time we have ever done that at the BYU
meet. The course ended up being a bit longer than a 5k (probably between
3.15 and 3.20). Jenna Connell and Sydnee Rayl ran together and were our
top finishers in the freshman/sophomore girls
race. They led a strong group of 6 girls who placed between 10th and
30th. We finished with a win against the American Fork squad who beat
our rookies at Highland. Grace Neuenschwander and Kaitlyn Datwyler
pulled away from the field to finish 1-2 in the JV
Girls race. We had a strong pack with our top 5 all finishing in the
top 13. It was fun to see our varsity girls respond to some tough
competition from American Fork. Aubrey looked very strong again as she
pulled away early and widened the gap for the individual
title. Miah put in a killer move with 1000m to go and finished in 2nd
place. Our 3-4-5 runners crossed the line only 2 seconds apart in 9th,
10th, and 11th. It was a good victory - and once again showed our girls
patience and toughness. The Freshman and Sophomore
boys were led by a tremendous effort from Jacob Vaughan. He is still
pretty new to cross country, but is really showing some great promise.
He got the individual win with 17:53. Josh Christiansen and McKay
Treadwell also had their best performances of the
year, finishing 5th and 6th. We finished with 11 of the top 20 in the
race. I am very impressed with our young group of boys. It is a HUGE
group (something like 30 sophomores), and we have a lot of potential to
be strong over the next few years (with some
hard work of course). The older JV boys could probably make a case that
we have the strongest and deepest JV group in the country. We swept the
top 8 places and had 15 of the top 30 runners. We bumped sophomore Josh
Peters up into the Junior/Senior race and
he took advantage of the opportunity with a victory. He finished in
17:22 and was followed by 7 teammates under 18:00. And finally in the
boys Varsity race, we showed why we are a top 10 team in the U.S. We
finished with all 5 of our scorers in the top 10
of the race. Josh Ward and Stokton Smith ran strong and pushed each
other to a 2-3 finish. Colton Rimann stepped up big for 5th place.
Camren Todd finished 9th (and was the #2 sophomore in the entire meet by
only .5 seconds), and Logan MacKay passed 11 runners
in the final kilometer to finish in 10th place. It was our toughest
TEAM performance yet this year. Having a :27 gap from the 1st to 5th is
very impressive. You can see the Davis results at the bottom of this
email and the full results at www.runnercard.com
It
was also a lot of fun to see so many alumni in the races. Great job to
Kimball Potter (Unattached), Preston Johnson (Weber), Kenzie Weir (BYU),
Hannah Albrechtsen (BYU), Ellie Child (Weber), Taylor Cox (Weber).
Our early season races have come to a close. As we look forward, we will really focus on preparing perfectly for a few championship races - Bob Firman, Region, State, and NXN. We are just getting to my favorite part of the season.
Athletes of the Week:
Madeline English - Huge PR at the BYU Invite for 23rd overall.
Sam Hedquist - Strong race at BYU for 9th place with a killer kick.
Amber Berry - Always works hard, gives a ton of heart, and had a great race for 36th at BYU.
Brigham Halverson - 2 solid races this week with some great improvement.
Bryce Ferguson - Ran smart and strong this week; displayed great teamwork with Mitch Perry at the BYU race.
Colton Rimann - Has worked incredibly hard and it pays off - 5th overall at BYU.
This Week: The
Wednesday meet at Weber has been cancelled. We will be focusing on a
very strong week of workouts. The hardest days will be Tuesday
and Thursday.
T-Shirts: Will be in by the end of the week. Pay $10 per shirt in the office sometime this week. Thanks.
Bob Firman:
We will also be finalizing our plans for the Bob Firman trip this week.
I have attached the itinerary to this email once again. Please
let me know if you have any questions. I wish we could take everyone on
the trip. Those who do not race at Bob Firman will have the option to
race next week Wednesday (the 24th) at the Layton High Open Region
Meet.
Brad's Corner:
My dad was a
pretty good runner. Didn't start running until he was 40, and ran sub
16 minutes for the 5K. I remember my Dad saying once: "It's not the guy
in the new shiny shoes I worry about, it's
the guy in the old worn out racing flats. He's usually the guy who
trained his guts out."
What he meant was that looks are not everything.
The first race I ever ran in 3rd Grade was a 400 meter race in Liberty, UT. I remember this girl is a turquoise track suit. I remember thinking: "Oh wow! She must be good." I was in Levi jeans and Velcro shoes. The gun went off. I took off like a shot eventually winning. The girl in the turquoise suit was nowhere near the front.
Runners come in all shapes and styles. Tall, short, skinny, muscly, etc. We all have different strengths. Never count out a competitor or new teammate by if they look fast. Respect all racers and teammates. You never know who your competition will be.
*Next week though, I'll write about dressing like a runner, and looking good. :)
