Davis Cross Country Update

Darts -
Sorry for the delayed update this week. I am thoroughly enjoying my vacation with my wife :) In fact, I am typing this while overlooking the ocean, listening to the soothing sounds of the waves crashing on the beach.
Last week was one of my favorite weeks so far this year (they have all been good though). I know we didn't race, but we had some very crucial workouts, and I feel we nailed them as a TEAM. I was a little worried going into the week that we would be mentally tired or slightly worn out from the previous weeks of racing, but instead I saw some hungry, determined runners who were ready to push themselves and put in the work necessary to prepare us for region and state. The hills on Tuesday were killer, but you stayed positive and pushed your limits. The Barnes Park workout was FAST - but you handled it very well and worked well as a TEAM. And from what I have heard, the Saturday run at Vita Course was one of our best ever with 4 girls running around 53:00 (the 4 fastest times ever run by current Davis athletes), and Skylar Williams running the #3 all-time mark with 2 other boys running in our top 10 all-time marks (http://www.davisxc.blogspot.com/p/vita-course-all-time.html). I wish I could have been there.
It was a very important week, and I thank you all for trusting me and for putting the necessary work in. It will pay off as we finish our season with some very big races.

This week we get back into race mode. On Wednesday we ARE going to go the Viewmont Open Region Meet - although we are holding back just a little bit. The first 2 miles of the race are going to be very controlled - and the final mile of the race will be a little faster. Then on Friday we are going to compete at the Westlake Invitational at Westlake High School. The competition looks to be very strong at the Westlake meet.

Viewmont Race - The race will be held at Bountiful Pond. To get there - head south on Legacy Hwy until 500 South exit. Off the exit, turn to the right and follow the road down to the pond which will be on your left. I don't know the course very well, but I do know that you should not have your spikes in your racing shoes. Here is the schedule:
1:30 - excused from class
1:45 - Bus leaves
3:30 - Girls JV
4:00 - Boys JV
4:30 - Girls Varsity - Taylor, Aubrey, Hannah, Kenzie, Ashley, Aimee, Sierra, Josey, Ally, Miah, Sam, Grace, Chelsey
5:00 - Boys Varsity - Skylar, Josh, Colton, Kimball, Stokton, Logan M., Ethan, Matt H., Alex W., Colter, Daniel T, Camren, Kent, Britton, Brandon P.
6:00 - Back to the school

Westlake Invitational - In Saratoga Springs
1:30 - Excused from School
1:45 - Bus Leaves
4:00 - Girls JV
4:30 - Boys JV
5:00 - Girls Varsity
5:30 - Boys Varsity
*We can run 7 in the varsity races - I have not determined who the 7 will be in each race at this point.

Other Items:
Seniors who plan/hope to run in college - you need to start your eligibility process by going to the NCAA Eligibility Center and registering. The web site is http://web1.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.jsp There is a fee involved, but if you have any thoughts about running in college, this is a step you need to take before you can be recruited. It will also help you make sure you do all the things you need to in order to be eligible.
2014 XC Camp - Will be from July 28-August 1 (I have had people ask already).
NXN Southwest Regionals - We will be able to take between 48-50 athletes. We will leave on Thursday, November 21 and return on Sunday, November 24. I will email out the itinerary when I get back to my school computer. It lists the hotels where we will be staying.

I hope the 400s went well today. I am excited to be back with you in a few days.
Stay hungry. Stay strong.

DXC Update - Bob Firman Invite

Darts -
Thanks for a great trip up to Boise for the Bob Firman Invitational. I was pleased with the way our TEAM raced, and also very happy about how well behaved you were on the trip. I hope that you had a lot of fun, learned something from your race, and made some great memories. Thanks to those parents who were able to come up and help us out with support and other things, thanks to those parents who dropped off food/snacks at the school on Friday morning, and thanks to the boys for making those really cool shirts :)
I felt like we did a great job preparing and racing well on the road (which is a good sign for some later races). I also felt like many of you ran tough even if you didn't have the best day. Although that is one thing I think many of you can work on - running tough on a bad day. It is important to stay positive and to rise up to the challenges that face you - either on a tough course or a difficult day - you still want to give 100% - never give up!! (Even when the race is not going your way). A Champion finds a way to race through the pain and doubt that comes on a bad day. Race and Train like a Champion no matter what place you finish! I also feel like we can continue to work on being confident and fearless - and maybe on tying our shoes a little better (I think I saw 3 shoes undone on the second lap from our team).
We did perform very well against some of the best competition in the Western U.S. The varsity boys finished 6th in the elite varsity race. Skylar ran a great race to lead the way for us - his time of 15:57 was only the 3rd time we have had someone under 16:00 on the course (Jared Ward and Brad Nye are the other two). The rest of the boys also fought hard - with Josh Ward, Colton Rimann, Logan MacKay, and Stokton Smith rounding out the top 5. We were very close to 3rd place in the race - and I feel like we are right on track to be ready for some great races at region, state, and NXN Southwest. The next 7 boys ran in the large school race where they finished 5th out of nearly 30 teams. We were the top JV team in the race - the 4 teams who beat us were all the top 7 from their schools. We had some outstanding races from Colter Blanchard (17:06), Daniel Tumblin (17:17), and Camren Todd (17:23). Our young group of boys is coming right along - if we had scored the meet without any seniors in any of the races, we would have finished 1st (but not by much). With some hard work over the next 365 days, we could be going back to Bob Firman and fighting for the top spot. The JV boys also looked strong with 6 boys in the top 20. We were led by a strong race from Tom Moncur (6th).
The Varsity Girls continued their undefeated reign, taking on the best Utah schools and a few of the top schools from Idaho, Washington, and California. We had a great 1-2 punch with Taylor Cox and Aubrey Argyle finishing 4-5 in the race and running our 4th and 5th fastest times ever on the course (18:22 and 18:23). Our strength has been our pack - and it was again this weekend with our top 5 girls in the top 20 (and under 19:00). Hannah Albrechtsen was 10th (with a pretty bad sinus infection), Kenzie Weir was 16th, and Ashley Tyndall was 20th. Both Aimee Vance (26th), and Josey Hedquist (47th) would have been in every other teams' top 5. We ended up winning the elite varsity race by almost 100 points, and we ran the course record for team time by almost a full minute (93:08 for our top 5 combined). Our top 7 JV girls did amazing in the Large School Varsity Race against the varsity teams that were not entered in the elite race. Sierra Graham had an awesome first race back from a hamstring injury to finish 3rd, and Ally Geisler ran the 4th fastest 9th grade time of the day to finish 4th. Grace Neuenschwander and Sam Hedquist also finished in the top 20 as our JV girls won the varsity race by 26 points.

Athletes of the Week:
Stokton Smith - for a very gutsy race, despite some health issues as of late. He is on his road back and will make a huge difference for us in the future.
JR Oldham - for his huge 77 second improvement over the BYU 5k last week. And for being so helpful on a trip once again. And for his creativity on the bus (hammock).
Taylor Cox - for coming up big in a big race once again and leading the way for us with a 4th place finish. Holy fast race, Batman!
Morgan Miller - for having our biggest girls improvement with a 63 second improvement over BYU - and for doing it with a bad ankle - way to go Wonder Woman.

Important Information:
T-Shirts - If your parents ordered a shirt (or two) on the 2nd order - please pay $10 per shirt in the office. The shirts should come in late this week or early next week.

DXC Update - District and BYU

Darts -
I love what I am seeing from this TEAM. I am seeing unity, unselfishness, toughness, and heart. It was such a fun week to be a part of Davis Cross Country. We have another big week of training and a very important meet at the end of the week (Bob Firman). The season is only 6 more weeks - we need to stay focused and hungry, and we need to continue to work as a TEAM.

Davis District Championships - The girls made history on Wednesday at Layton Park as we shattered the team time record for the 2.75 mile District course. The old record was from 2008 when we ran 88:03 (17:36 average). On Wednesday, our top 5 girls ran 84:26 (16:53 average). We had a record number of girls under 18:00 (10), and we nearly perfect scored the field. Our girls won with 16 points - followed by Syracuse with 79. The individual champion was Taylor Cox with a time of 16:45 (#2 all-time for the course). Taylor, Aubrey, and Kenzie pulled away late in the race for the 1-2-3 finish. Aubrey set the freshman record time for the course with 16:48. The JV girls finished with a perfect score (15) to win over 2nd place, Syracuse (56). The JV Girls took the top 11 spots and were led by Madi Bledsoe (19:03).
The boys were nearly as dominant. In the varsity race, we scored 26 points to finish ahead of Woods Cross (73). Skylar Williams finished 2nd with a 14:25, and Josh Ward had a very solid last mile to finish 3rd in 14:31. The JV Boys scored a perfect 15 points and took 16 of the top 20 places in the race.
As I have said a few times already, our young group is really coming along. If we had only run our freshman and sophomore girls against the other teams, we would have still won the varsity race 33-60. If we had only run our freshman and sophomore boys, we would have barely lost to Woods Cross and Clearfield.
If you would like to see the full results, they are posted on the blog (www.davisxc.blogspot.com) I added some new tabs at the top - they are not all complete - but there is one with the links to all the results from this year so far.

BYU Invitational - It was the DXC show at the BYU Invite on Saturday. We were 1 point away from pulling off the perfect sweep of all 6 races at the Invite. No other team finished with all 6 of their teams in the top 10.
It would be difficult to go over all of the highlights for the day because there were so many great races. A few things I though we did very well: we ran patiently and really moved up over the 2nd and 3rd mile; we ran with a lot of toughness - when the pain came, we didn't fade and we didn't give up; and for the most part we ran in groups and helped each other out - although I still saw moments where we had a string of Davis runners separated by 10 seconds or less in the middle of the race - running the same pace, but not running together. Some things I think we can work on: Not settling behind packs of other runners who were slowing down and causing us to slow down.
The Freshman/Sophomore girls finished with 35 points - only 1 point behind our American Fork rivals. We had 3 girls in the top 5 - Ally Geisler (1st), Grace Neuenschwander (4th), and Sam Hedquist (5th). It was a very smart race by Ally as the pace early in the race was a little fast - two girls had pulled away, but Ally and Grace slowly reeled them in over the final mile of the race and then Ally had a monster finish for the win. In the girls JV race, we won by almost 60 points, and we earned our most t-shirts of the day. We had 9 girls finish in the top 30, and we were led by Kaitlyn Datwyler in 5th and Nicole Wood in 6th. In the girls varsity race, we did something that I am not sure I have ever seen at an Invite of this size - we beat the entire field. If all of the other teams were to combine their runners against us, we still would have won 26-29. We finished with 5 girls in the top 9. Aubrey ran such a strong race to pull away in the final mile for the individual win. Taylor worked through the hard middle mile to finish 3rd. Kenzie was patient and moved up very well to cross the line in 5th. Hannah went from 13th to 8th in the final 800m of the race (despite feeling a little sick all morning). And Ashley ran steady (as always) to finish 9th. We are really working well together - and it shows in the efforts and the heart these girls are giving for each other as they race.
In the boys freshman/sophomore race, we pulled off the victory despite bumping a few of our freshman up to the JV race. Britton Porter led our charge of 5 boys in the top 20 with a 4th place finish, and Matt Ward looked very strong right behind him in 5th. We also had big improvements from Bryce Ferguson, Josh Christiansen, and Zach Moncur. As the day went on, the course got more sloppy (and a little slower); the JV boys did not let that bother them as they put 7 in the top 25. We were led by Matt Hawkins who got the individual victory in 17:34. I thought we had very strong races from Camren Todd, Frasier Williamsen, and Mitch Perry. Matt, Camren, and Frasier were the 4th, 5th, and 6th fastest freshman in the entire meet. In the varsity boys, we were going up against the #2 ranked team in the state and #3 ranked team in the southwest region (Lone Peak). Our boys really stepped up once again and ran a killer TEAM race. Skylar led the way for us in 5th - you could see his determination on the track as he was moving over the final 300m. Josh is getting stronger with every race and finished in 9th. When we had to pull Stokton from the race because of asthma issues, the rest of the TEAM came through - particularly Logan MacKay. Even though this is only his 5th cross country race - he is running like a veteran. He moved up 16 places in the final 1000m of the race - and passed 3 (almost 4) Lone Peak runners in the process - to finish as our 5th scorer. The boys won by 18 over Lone Peak - if Logan had not made that move, we would have tied Lone Peak (and then lost on the tie breaker).

DXC Update - Murray Invite

Darts -
It was a great week for the Darts. We looked strong as a TEAM at both of our meets this week, and we are moving in the right direction - getting stronger and faster. I was very pleased with the way we packed together in the races as a TEAM, and with the way we closed out the races. We are fighting to the finish line. I thought that a few of you looked tired at the Murray Invite (but that might have just been because I was exhausted). If you felt tired at Murray, I would tell you to look at your preparation - sleep, eating, nerves, hydration. It was definitely a hot, dry afternoon and I think that dehydration impacted a few of you. If you felt like you drank a lot of water, but still felt dehydrated, you may have been low on electrolytes (which you can get from Gatorade or other sports drinks). You want to make sure that your hydration includes drinks with electrolytes and not just straight water all day long.

Pre-Region: We swept the races at the Pre-Region 2 mile on Tuesday at Layton Park. The girls were led by a strong 1-2-3 finish by Taylor Cox (11:47), Aubrey Argyle (11:53), and Kenzie Weir (12:01). We had 10 girls run under 13:00 and we set a new team time record for the course (adding up the top 5 times) with 59:59 (breaking last year's record of 60:39). The varsity boys also finished 1-2-3 with Skylar Williams (10:10), Stokton Smith (10:16), and Josh Ward (10:23) looking strong up front. We had a record number of boys under 11:20 with 17. Our JV boys finished 1-11 and were led by a great first race back from injury by Colter Blanchard (11:04). Our seniors are running strong, and our young runners are definitely improving with each race. The full results are posted at http://www.davisxc.blogspot.com/2013/09/pre-region-results.html

Murray Invite: It is always a little tough to have back to back races in a week - but we showed up on Friday at the Murray Invite ready to compete. The Murray course ended up being about 3.0 miles. It was probably about 30-35 seconds slower than Highland, and about 15 seconds faster than the Murray course from last year (because of some adjustments by the baseball field). I was pleased to see that many of our boys and girls ran faster than we did at Highland (relative to the courses) and I was also very excited about some of the improvements over one year ago. In 2012 we won both the boys and girls varsity races at Murray - this year we ran 6 different varsity girls and won again, and we ran 6 new varsity boys and nearly pulled off the victory.
The girls finished 2nd in the Rookie Race, 1st in the JV Race, and 1st in the Varsity Race - but we had to fight hard in each of the races. In the rookie race we had 3 girls in the top 15: Sara Williams (6th), Sydney Zaugg (7th), and Sariah Dixon (12th). We also saw some strong improvements from Rachel Clouse and Amber Berry. Our JV girls had 8 of the top 16 places including the victory by Grace Neuenschwander with a time of 19:51. We had big improvements over Highland from Madi Bledsoe and Kaitlyn Datwyler who both finished in our top 5. In the Varsity Girls race, Park City gave us a run for our money. At the 2.5 mile mark, their top 4 were beating our top 4 by quite a bit. I was very impressed with the way our girls dug deep over that final 800m and secured the victory. We have a TEAM that is willing to sacrifice and hurt for each other - and it paid off for the victory. We were led this time by our super freshman, Aubrey Argyle. She finished 6th with 18:05 and was very tough over the final mile of the race. Our pack stayed close together with our next 4 girls finishing within 5 seconds of each other - Kenzie Weir (18:30), Taylor Cox (18:30), Ashley Tyndall (18:31), and Hannah Albrechtsen (18:35). We had our third different #1 runner - which can really be a strength for us as we continue our season. Our pack will also be our strength - and I love seeing each of you doing everything you can to stay with the pack when it gets tough. It was another girls team time record for the course (taking into account the adjustments to the Murray course over the past few years). We got the victory 65-90 over Park City.
The Rookie Boys showed our greatest improvement over the Highland Invite. We improved by an average of :10 per runner on a course that was .10 miles longer. It was an awesome victory for Camren Todd - who is continually showing that he has a great future as a cross country runner. His time of 17:29 was the 9th fastest freshman time including all 3 races (in a very strong field of freshman runners). Camren would be running varsity on 40 of the 44 schools in the varsity race. We also had very strong races/improvements from Matt Ward (5th), Dallin Kitchen, Jason Lang, Trevor Zimmerman, Jace Callor, Zach Moncur, Brandon Christensen, Cole Stephenson, and Seth Valentine. Our Rookie boys' team time would have beat 16 of the teams in the Varsity Race. In the JV Race, we had a breakthrough effort from Alex White who came away with the individual victory in 16:57. Our top 5 all finished in the top 9 of the race - Daniel Tumblin (3rd), Kent Thompson (5th), Colter Blanchard (8th), and Britton Porter (9th). And we had 10 of the top 20 runners. It is exactly what we need - both to keep our future strong and to keep our varsity runners working hard for their spots. I encourage you JV runners to train like and with the varsity runners - keep them working hard - keep challenging and pushing one another in a positive way. In the Varsity Race we needed someone to step up big for us because we were missing Stokton. I love the way that each of the 7 boys in the race did what they could to make up the difference. We ended up 2nd by only 2 points against a very strong Ogden team. Skylar led the way for us with his 7th place finish (#2 from 5A). Josh Ward finished like a beast in 13th. Colton Rimann was the #3 sophomore of the day in 23rd. Kimball Potter fought hard to finish 30th. Ethan Stuart came through huge for us in 40th. And Logan MacKay and Matt Hawkins finished as the top #6 and #7 runners in the race - which would have been huge for us in the case of a tie (which nearly happened). Each of the boys dug deep and showed a lot of HEART. That is one thing that I know this TEAM has - HEART! I love seeing it - and I want to continue to see more of it. Race with purpose and race through the line for your TEAM.
I don't have time to type up all of the Davis results - but you can see them at www.runnercard.com

Bob Firman (September 20-21) - Please turn in your surveys tomorrow if you have not yet turned them in (that will be the last day to get them in). I sent out the information this past week - let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

T-Shirts: You can pay for your t-shirts in the office ($10 each). They should be here this week.

Wasatch 100 Report - I just want to thank each of you for your support and encouragement I felt with the Wasatch 100 (or I guess in my case, the 'Wasatch 39.4). The last month has been very challenging for me. Over the past 9 months, I put a lot of work and preparation into running the race, and I was very discouraged with my hip injury over the past 5 weeks. After running 3 miles last Monday and still feeling a lot of pain, I had decided to drop out of the race. I hadn't felt that sad in a long time. I went down to Salt Lake for the Pre-Race meeting on Thursday to pick up my race shirts (the only thing I thought I would get for the $200 entry). I let them know I wouldn't be running, and then for the next 30 minutes I made the mistake talking to a few crazy ultra-marathoners who kept telling me to just give it a try. So I walked back over to the table before they were gone and I checked back into the race. Despite the lady at the table telling me it was a bad idea and that I would probably cause lasting damage.
I felt a lot of adrenaline and excitement the rest of the night. It was really hard for me not to say anything at the varsity dinner at the Cox's (thanks Shawna and Roger for the perfect carbo-load). I got everything ready and tried to get a little sleep before getting up at 3:45 Friday morning and heading to the starting line (Vita Course). Starting the race, I knew that I didn't have much of a chance to finish having not really run for 4+ weeks, but I at least felt good about trying. I love the atmosphere and excitement at the starting line of an ultra marathon. I had decided that no matter how far I got, I was just going to think very positively and be happy I had the opportunity.
I was so relieved as I attempted running and my hip felt pretty good. There was dull pain on the downhill, but for the most part it felt fine. I passed the first drop-out opportunity (Fernwood) without hesitation and headed up the mountain. At the top of the first big climb (10 miles in), my hip still felt fine - but my quads were burning and I could tell that is where my trouble would be, but again I was thrilled to be in the race at the top of the mountain.
I went through the first big aid station at mile 18 and passed another opportunity to drop out - even though my legs were hurting quite a bit. I just kept moving. I passed through the aid stations at 23 and 28 and was struggling more and more. At about that point, I decided to go for Big Mountain (mile 39.4). It was not easy to get there, the downhills actually hurt more than anything, but I just kept being thankful that I was able to run some of it. I thought about going for Lamb's Canyon (mile 53), but it would mean I would miss the Murray races and I knew I wouldn't be able to move any more than 53. My heart was with the TEAM at Murray and I decided to go and watch you race.
Although I wish the last month would have gone differently and I wish I could have gone for a finish at the race, I am still grateful for what I learned through the experience. I should have stayed a little more positive with myself throughout the challenge with the injury. It also taught me a new appreciation and a new love for running.
I need to thank my wife for being so supportive and for never doubting me or my decision to run. She is always my rock when it comes to these insane races. Having her (and my girls) there at mile 39 meant a lot to me. And I want to thank you (the runners on the TEAM) for inspiring me to be my best through your examples of toughness and your passion for running. I am lucky to be associated with such great people.

DXC Update - September 1

Darts -
Great job of running during the first week of school. For some reason, it is always one of the more challenging weeks of the year - I think because of the transition into school and the fact that we are not used to the 90+ degree heat. Despite the challenges, I thought the week went very well for the TEAM, and I am especially pleased with the mile repeats on Tuesday and the Barnes Park workout on Friday. It looks to be really HOT again this upcoming week - and it will be very important to prepare for it (hydrate!!!)

It is sometimes easy to lose your focus and perspective with running. While competing/winning is definitely one aspect of what we do, I want each of you to know that there are more important things that come from running. I hope that none of you get too caught up in comparing yourself to anyone else on this team or any other team. If you are focusing on others too much, you are either going to get arrogant or you are going to get discouraged. The only comparing I want you to do is between you and what you can become as a runner (or a person). Are you giving your best effort in the workouts (regardless of how fast anyone else is running)? Are you preparing mentally and physically the best you can? Are you racing all the way through the finish line to really prove yourself? I want it to be the same on a TEAM level as well - sure, we are trying to beat the teams we race - but most importantly, what is our BEST? If we give our very best and lose, I will walk away satisfied and proud. If we give less than our best and somehow win, I will still want to see more from you as a TEAM. We have said it many times (I thought Brad said it extremely well at camp while talking about his accident): running is about being the best you can be, not about being the fastest person in the race. That is one of the things that I love most about running - it challenges each of us on an individual and personal level. So - even if you have goals to be a scoring JV runner or make varsity or finish all-state in October - hold on to the most important perspective you can have with running - being your own personal best. Approach each race with a goal and a plan to push yourself beyond what you think you are capable of.

We have 3 very busy weeks in front of us. This week we have the Pre-Region Meet on Tuesday and the Murray Invite on Friday. Next week we have the District Championships on Wednesday and BYU on Saturday. And the following week we are taking 50 members of the TEAM to Boise, ID for the Bob Firman Invitational. Everything we do during these 3 weeks will affect the rest of our season. Show up to each practice and each race with a positive attitude - ready to make yourself and your TEAM better. Make sure you are taking care of yourselves and getting the nutrition and the rest that you need. Make sure you are stretching after we run, doing your abs, and icing (when there is ice available and when you need it).

Coming Up:
Monday - Practice at the school at 7:00am. If we have enough drivers, we might go to the Ogden River Parkway for a 6-8 mile run. If not, we will do the same distance from the school.
Tuesay - Pre-Region @ Layton Park: The race is 2 miles. We will be working out together after the boys varsity (you are all expected to stay for the workout). We should be done about 5:30. You are all excused at 1:30 (Junior High excused list will say 1:20). The bus will leave the school at 1:45. If you have to stay in class - please get to Layton Park ASAP after school. I want everyone there at 3:00 if possible.
Here is the schedule:
3:45 - Boys JV
4:05 - Girls JV and Varsity together
4:30 - Boys Varsity - Skylar Williams, Stokton Smith, Josh Ward, Colton Rimann, Kimball Potter, Ethan Stuart, Daniel Tumblin, Logan MacKay, Brandon Peters, Matt Hawkins, Kent Thompson, Tom Moncur.

Wednesday, September 11 - District Championships @ Layton Park
Saturday, September 14 - BYU Invite @ BYU
Friday-Saturday, September 20-21 - Bob Firman Invitational in Boise, ID. I will post the official invite list for the Bob Firman trip on Wednesday this week. We will be able to take 50 athletes on the trip. The invites will be determined by 1) performance, 2) commitment to practices, 3) seniority. The cost of the trip will be $110 (due by Tuesday, September 17). If you are one of the athletes who received a survey, please get that turned into the office by Tuesday (September 3rd). Thanks.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Keep having fun and running hard.
Coach Talley
