DXC Update - Region Championships

Darts -
The highlight of the week was the Region Championships. It was a very rewarding day as we were the top TEAM in all 4 races. Our boys won their 17th straight region title, and the girls won their 7th. All of our hard work and determination from the summer and the season was very evident in the way you raced as individuals and as a TEAM.
Girls JV - we finished with the top 13 places, and if our JV girls had been in the varsity race, we would have finished 2nd to our own varsity girls. We were led by a very strong race from Hannah Albrechtsen. It caps off a great comeback season from Hannah after some summer injury and health challenges. Her time of 19:54 is the fastest winning JV time in region history. Elise Anderson finished strong for 2nd in 20:05 and Josey Hedquist was 3rd in 20:12. Great job to our seniors in the race - Michaela Uresk (4th), Sadie Hutchinson (6th), Sierra Haslam (7th), Katie Frandsen (8th), Shaylee Argyle (16th), and Nalany Resek (25th). I was also very proud of Taylor Cox and her valiant effort in pushing the pace and really going after an amazing performance over the first 2.5 miles of the race. It is very hard to be mentally tough enough to push your body as hard as she did.
Boys JV - The boys JV race was very exciting start to finish. I loved the pack we had of 15 Davis boys coming through the mile together. We finished the race with 13 of the top 14, and like our girls, our boys JV would have finished 2nd to our boys in the varsity race. Josh Ward finished with an amazing final 800m to get the victory in 16:30 (was fast enough for 10th in the varsity race). Josh was pushed over that final half mile by Ryan Lee who ended up 3rd in 16:40. It was awesome watching them really dig in over the final half mile - just as we had challenge them to do. Matt Hawkins has improved a ton as the season progressed - possibly our surprise runner of the year - and he came up to finish 2nd in 16:35. It was a great final race for our seniors: Ryan Lee (3rd) Devin Farnsworth (6th), Isaac Clouse (8th), Seth Thompson (9th), Ryan Tanner (13th), Phillip Baker (19th), and Trevor Fry (23rd). For both the boys and the girls, our seniors have really led the way for us this season - I couldn't be more proud of all they have accomplished.
Girls Varsity - The girls varsity race was quite possibly the best 3 mile race we have ever had as a Davis girls TEAM. We had 8 of the top 10 girls in the race, we had a record 8 girls under 19:00, and we shattered the team time record on the course by over 2:30. Our top 5 girls times combined for 91:33 (an average time of 18:19). Ellie Child and Shea Martinez were both under the previous course record, and Ellie got the region championship in 17:37. Shea finished a strong 2nd in 17:51. Ashley Tyndall finished 5th with 18:39 in her best race of the year. Chelsey Johnson had a great final 200m to finish 6th in 18:43. Mikell Wood continued her strong running with 7th in 18:43. Kenzie Weir ran extremely tough to finish 8th in 18:44 as well. And Seniors Joanna Boyd and Kami Dixon were 9th and 10th. It showed that we are ready to make a run at the state championships next week. If we can get the win, it will be our 5th state title in the past 6 years. We also have a shot at running the team time record for the state course. The current team time record is from the 1999 Bingham team that finished the year ranked #1 in the U.S. They ran a combined top 5 time of 93:50 (18:46 average). Although the state course is tougher than our region course, that time is completely in our reach.
Boys Varsity - for the 2nd year in a row, our boys came away with a perfect score (15) at the region meet. Our boys also finished with 8 in the top 10. We were led by a great 1-2 finish from Alex Hedquist and Brayden Cromar. These two seniors (along with a few others on the TEAM) have worked so well together through 4 cross country seasons now. As I watched Alex and Brayden and the others flying down the back side of the park about 2.5 miles into the race for the last time, I got just a bit emotional. Again - it has been such a pleasure to work with this group of seniors. They have done so much for our program, and they are leaving it stronger than ever. Alex was just 4 seconds off the course record with his time of 15:22. Brayden finished just :03 back in 2nd. Skylar Williams had a strong finish to pick up 3rd in 15:52, Andrew Aposhian was 4th in 15:53, Hayden Hansen was 5th in 15:57, Stokton Smith was 7th in 16:11, and Preston Johnson was 9th in 16:22. It is sure nice to have Preston coming back. We also had 3 other seniors in the race who have been committed and hard working examples of what DXC is all about - good job to Sam Haws, Taylor Goldsberry, and Jackson Sagers. Our team time of 78:29 is #2 all-time to our time of 77:55 in 2011.

Athletes of the Week: Ashley Tyndall, Chelsey Johnson, Sadie Hutchinson, Alex Hedquist, Skylar Williams, Devin Farnsworth

Mile Time Trial: For those of you who are not racing in the state meet. We will be having an optional mile time trial on the track on Monday for practice. I would encourage all of you to participate. The time trial will take place at the conclusion of the varsity workout.

State Cross Country: The state meet is on Wednesday (October 17th) at Sugarhouse Park. The girls race at 2:00 and the boys race at 3:30. We will be excused from school at 11:15. The buses will leave at 11:30. You will need to check in with your 7th period teachers before we leave. I would like everyone at the state meet - of course those competing and the alternates, but also everyone else on the TEAM. We are going to need to provide a lot of energy and inspiration for those who are racing. We will have a TEAM meeting on Tuesday after school to go over our some last minute information including our race plan, our cheering plan, and a few other things you need to be aware of.

Long Sleeve Shirts: Should arrive by Tuesday. Pay your money in the office if you would like to pick your shirt up on Tuesday. $25 without a name on the sleeve. $30 with the name on the sleeve.

Fall Break: We will not be meeting over the fall break (October 18-20). But if you are hoping to go to NXN Southwest in November - you should run distance all 3 days (anywhere from 5 to 10 miles each day). We will have a meeting about NXN on Monday, October 22nd after school - followed by a workout.

TEAM Pictures: Will be on Wednesday, October 24th after school. We will wait for the 9th graders. Bring your uniforms.

Let's finish off the season with a week filled with positive thinking. Everything you say or think should be positive. We have the full potential to finish off this season with our greatest state championship meet ever. It is going to take a lot of guts and a lot of TEAMwork - but this is what we have been working for, and this is what we are ready for.
Let's just do that.
