Darts-
What a great week! Let's keep the momentum going! Several of you will be getting your first mileage prizes tomorrow! (100 miles for boys, 80 miles for girls). Please send those miles in! If you have not been invited to Final Surge, please let me know. I have been putting archived emails, our schedule and other information in our blog. If you have a question, look there first! www.davis.blogspot.com.
Many of you have started to get to know Frasier Williamson. He is going to help out and attend when he can this summer! We're so lucky to have an incredible legacy at Davis. Frasier was on one of the Davis TEAMs that placed at NXN. Really cool to have him running with us and helping us coaches!
If you are brand new, welcome! You are not behind and we'd love to have you! If you know of anyone else that wants to sign up (it's never too late) send them this link: I love a big TEAM! I am challenging everyone to get to know someone new every single day. Then report to me or Coach Sweat their name and what you learned about them.
A Note About Fundraising
If I’m being completely honest, fundraising is not my favorite part of my job. Unfortunately, with the way things are set up in our school district and state, it is part of my job (although Heidi Christensen has been incredibly helpful in this area, and I’m so grateful for that). So, here’s a little explanation.
In order for us to be the very best we can be—and compete with the top teams in the state and nation—we need to be able to travel to meets, pay for equipment, and help cover coaches' expenses so we don’t burn them out (haha).
- Davis School District does not fund sports. Davis High School has historically given teams about $1,000 for the season. As you can imagine, with 100 kids, this doesn’t cover much (although we’re very thankful for it!).
- Head coaches for cross country are paid $1,769—incidentally, this is lower than the assistant coach pay for every other sport and the lowest head coach pay overall. This amounts to less than $1 per hour. When I buy ribbons for the girls, organize pancake runs, or host parties—these expenses come out of my own pocket.
- If we want anything for our kids, we have to come up with the money ourselves. We can either fundraise or charge every participant directly through MyDSD and the club. We’ve decided to fundraise in order to offset some of the financial burden on families.
- We are easily the least expensive sport at Davis.
- Summer and winter are not official school sport seasons. For this reason, we’ve registered the Davis Running Club as both an official 501(c)(3) non-profit and a USATF club. When we attend NXR, camp, and Simplot, it’s through the club—not the school.
- Our Text-a-Thon fundraiser and Dart Challenge proceeds will go to DSDGives and then into a designated fund we can use for in-season expenses. This helps with equipment, buses, meet fees, uniforms, and—if possible—coaches’ pay and reimbursement. (We’re hoping to bring on a couple of assistant coaches who are not currently covered.)
At this point, we’ve raised $600—about $6 per athlete. I’m really hoping we can do a little better this week.
- Our "We Run These Streets" fundraiser that Heidi has organized will go to Davis Running Club. This will help offset NXR and team gear. We have two businesses committed to give and one is my husband's. (
) I know we can do a little more here as well.
So, while I wish this part of coaching could go away, we simply can’t survive without it. I’m asking all of you athletes to take a little ownership and see what you can do to help the team by fundraising.
Thank you—I appreciate you all!
This Week
Causey
We had originally planned to take the boys to Causey for the boy's retreat. The campsite is non-refundable (does anyone want to use it???) but I thought it might still be fun to go up for the day! So anyone that wants to, let's meet at Davis at 11:00 on Tuesday. I'll probably head back home around 4 or 5 (gotta get back for Track Tuesdays for your parents) but you guys can do whatever you want (provided your parents are ok with it). Bring paddleboards and food (I'm not planning on providing lunch).
Girls Retreat
Boys Retreat
We changed the date!
Moratorium
June 28th - Aug 4th is moratorium. Sweat and I will not be organizing practice, but you are more than welcome to organize yourselves!
Excited for another fun week of summer!
Coach Jami
