It is hard to believe that we have less than 4 weeks until the region championships and just over 5 weeks until the state meet. We are done with our opening races and moving into the "middle" of the season with the District Championships and Bob Firman coming up. I challenge each of you to re-commit to being disciplined and focused. Set some goals for the upcoming races, and really try to work on things that will make you your best - both in races and in every day life. Do your best to get a good night's rest every night, to eat enough and to eat healthy, and to show up to every practice with a positive attitude. Also, look for ways to help your teammates along the way - inspire and encourage them.
Murray Invitational - It was an awesome afternoon for us at the Murray Invitational last Friday. We are seeing progress every week. It is nice to see you all racing with more confidence, and I feel like we are getting better at racing as a TEAM and supporting one another. We came away with five 1st place and two 2nd place team finishes in the 8 races at Murray.
The boys won all 4 team races. We started with the seeded (or varsity) boys this time. In a very solid TEAM performance, we got the victory by 9 points over a tough Ogden team. The field was stacked with many of the best teams in the state, so this was a good win for our boys. We had all 8 boys finish in the top 32 with only a :35 spread. Josh Peters (8th) and Jacob Vaughan (10th) were our top finishers for the 2nd week in a row. The open boys dominated the competition, scoring only 18 points and putting 16 boys in the top 30 in a race with 483 participants. Devin Jaster led the way with the individual title in 14:59 and Adam Hequist and Connor Jones wrapped up the sweep of the top 3. We put our top 6 sophomore boys in the open JV race, but the rest of our sophomores stepped up and still got the team win. Caden Wheeler was our top soph with a strong time of 15:37. Our other scorers in the race were Trey Ferrin, Oakley James, Noah Stuart, and Mitch Clove. And our Freshman boys continue to show that they are the best freshmen team in the state. We got the victory against a strong, young team from Riverton with the score of 35-59. Our young guys are running like veterans - patient and gutsy. Jacob Halverson was our top guy in 2nd, and Carson Coleman, Garrett Direda, Jalen Anderton, and Connor Finlinson all finished in the top 15.
The girls also continued to show toughness. We finished a close 2nd to AF in the seeded race 95-116. Aubrey Argyle is getting stronger each week - this time with a 5th place finish against a loaded individual field. Our next 5 girls were packed pretty tight together with only 19 seconds separating our 2-6. In the open race, our girls came away with the victory with a very low score of 24. Madeline English ran tough for the 1st place finish, Rosie Schraedel was 3rd, and Autumn Taylor, Jennica Robinson, and Haylee Downey also finished in the top 10. Overall we had 20 girls dip under 20:00 on the course. We also bumped our top 6 sophomore girls into the open race, but it didn't stop our other sophomores from putting together a great team performance for 2nd place. Despite getting a little lost and adding on to the course, Jacque Smith kept her cool and got the individual victory. Our other 4 scorers in the race were Hannah McGurk (7th), Zoey Edgmon, Jaysi Porter, and Gabby Mason. And in the freshman girls race, we only have 3 freshman, but they are doing a phenomenal job working together and racing hard. Tilly Vasquez finished 9th, Jasmine Balahadia was 12th, and Lindsey Bowhuis was 47th. We could use some more 9th graders if you know any junior high girls who love to run.

Parents Night - We are having our annual Davis XC Parents Night on Thursday (9/15) at 6:30pm in the Davis Auditorium. We have a special guest speaker this year. Jared Ward will be coming to talk about his Olympic experience. All athletes and parents (and old enough siblings) are invited to come.
Bob Firman - I sent out the information about Bob Firman last week. I have received confirmations from most of you. If you are on the list, but unable to attend, please let me know ASAP. I will be entering the fines in the DSD system tomorrow or Tuesday, and we will be working out some final details this week. Once again, the trip is September 23-24 and the cost is $110. Let me know if you have any questions.

Monday - Workout at Layton Park on the District Course. 9th graders can either meet us at the south doors no later than 3:10 or meet us over at Layton Park ready to run.
Tuesday - Morning Run + After School Run (both easy)
Wednesday - Davis District Championships at Layton Park
Thursday - Normal Practice (Distance Run) + Parents Night with Jared Ward (6:30pm)
Friday - Distance run on your own before or after school
Saturday - 8:00am practice - workout on the track.
*If you cannot make it to Saturday's practice, I want you to come after school on Friday to do the workout - meet in my classroom at 2:40. We'll make it quick.
