DXC Update - State Championships

Darts -
It has been an incredible cross country season. I know that we are not completely done with what we set out to do, but our regular season (through the state meet) was full of some great experiences and some awesome DXC performances. I want to thank all our athletes for making it such a great year - for contributing in ways more than just running, for showing up ready to work, for racing with heart and purpose, and for helping to build a unified TEAM. I want to thank all of our parents for their support and encouragement and volunteer help. We are lucky to have such a wonderful group of parents and we could not have accomplished all we did without them. And I want to thank our coaching staff - Coach Anderson and Coach Timothy have been awesome - they have given so much of their time, energy, and love to the athletes on this team - and we appreciate all they have done.
The state cross country championships were this past Wednesday at Sugarhouse Park. Although there were some changes to the final mile of the original course, it is still a very challenging course - mentally and physically. From what we can tell, the times are very similar to the old course (we estimate 0-5 seconds faster) - making this possibly our greatest state meet ever (boys and girls).
The girls started us off with a very tough effort.  We finished with 51 points - only 10 points away from the championship. It would have been nice to get the victory - but the American Fork girls had to run very well to beat us. Courtney led the way with a killer 1st place performance. She took the lead right before 1/2 way and didn't look back. She pushed hard to the finish line and ran 17:24 - a course record for the new course (all divisions) - and would have been the fastest on the old course by :01. Aubrey earned her 3rd straight all-state finish with 4th place in 17:59. She is the first Davis athlete to go under 18:00 twice on the state course. Sam Hedquist ran strong in her final state meet with a 15th place finish in 18:48. Jenna and Ally came in right together at 19:03 and 19:04 at 18th and 19th to round out our top 5. Grace and Miah may not have had their best days, but they fought their way to the finish line in 29th and 35th. The girls ran our fastest ever team time of 92:19 - beating the team time of 92:27 from 2013. One thing is for certain, this is a group of girls who are putting a lot of heart into their running, and they are not finished yet! We will keep working for NXN and we will have 5 of these girls back in a year doing their all to be their best.
Our boys ran their best performance of the year when it really counted. We had a great race at region, and some solid preparation coming into the state meet. They ran the race plan to perfection - they were patient through the first half of the race - stayed steady and didn't settle in the middle - and then moved hard when it was time to move. It was so exciting watching our guys emerge from the huge pack over the final mile of the race. If you look at the video and the pictures about 1 mile into the race, we are not in the lead. Lone Peak, American Fork, and Lehi all had groups of runners in position, but we stayed calm and ready and then laid it down over the 2nd half of the race. Camren Todd ran gutsy up front with the chase pack and fought hard for a 6th place finish (15:26) to lead the way for us. Then our pack came through - Logan finished 8th (15:36 - getting all-state), Colter closed hard in 11th (15:42), Colton was 12th (15:44), and Matt was 13th (15:45). We had our best 1-5 spread of the year with only 18.4 seconds from Camren to Matt. It was a true TEAM victory. Josh and Frasier also finished well with 16:04 and 16:05 - both placing ahead of every other team's #5 guy. It was one of the most competitive state meet fields ever - and our boys came away with a 23 point victory: Davis 50, Lehi 73, American Fork 88, and Lone Peak 96. We also finished 1st in the overall combined results (all divisions), with a 34 point victory over Timpanogos. The boys team time of 78:15 is our all-time record by :46. It was our first state championship since 2007 and our 9th all time (1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007). They have worked very hard for this title, and they definitely deserve to be called champions. It was a performance that the past Davis greats would be proud of and future Davis runners will hold as legendary.

Athletes of the Week:
Aubrey Argyle, Ally Geisler, Miah Weaver
Colton Rimann, Colter Blanchard

I saw this quote from Matt Centrowitz that really reminded me of our team this season: "The rise to greatness is an inevitable struggle. Day after day, pain, perseverance, emotion, and doubt. Early to bed, Early to rise. Get up, run, eat healthy, sleep, eat healthy, workout, eat healthy, go to bed. Start over. Do core, back strengthening, leg strengthening, lifting, agility, stair runs, sprints, It seemingly never ends, the lonely road of champions. The worst part is that you don't know if it works until you get your moment. And even if you DO get that moment, you still have to seize it. After all of that work, you still may come up short. And that's what makes the road so special. It's not the pain that scares people away, it's the fear. The fear of coming up short. The difference between the champion and the rest? The champion dismisses it."

Next 4 Weeks: I hope that all of you will continue to train with the team for the next 4 weeks. Even if you did not get invited to Nike Regionals, it will still be a fun month of training, give you some benefit for track and xc next year, and give you a chance to run in one more race (Pre-Nike at Layton Park). I have attached the workout schedule for the next 4 weeks. Please let me know if you have any questions. If you are going to commit to these 4 weeks, show up tomorrow and please commit fully to do your best to contribute to the overall team progress.

TEAM Pictures - Wednesday after school. Wear your uniform. We will meet in my classroom at 2:45. We will take senior pics first and we will wait for the 9th graders before we take the full team picture.

TEAM Banquet - Thursday, 11/5 at 6:00pm - place to be announced.

DXC Update - Region Champs!!

Darts -
We put together some very strong performances at the Region Championships this past Friday. It was nearly a perfect day with perfect course conditions, and we were ready to take full advantage of the opportunity ("Seize the Day"). We came away with victories in all 4 races, and more medals than we have ever won at region (36). It was the 10th region title in a row for the girls and the 20th for the boys (dating back to 1996). It was also the first time (that I could find) where we swept both the boys and the girls JV top 10. Most of all, I was proud of all the hard work that we have put in this season, the teamwork I saw in each of the races, and the gutsy efforts that we had throughout. You can see the full results on the blog - www.davisxc.blogspot.com

The Girls JV started us off with some very fast times. We took the top 13 places and had 25 of the top 26 finishers. Alicia Halverson (just a freshman) led from start to finish and ran a new region JV record of 19:26 (would have been 11th in varsity). The old record was 19:27 from Chelsey Johnson (2013). Alicia was followed by another freshman, Rosie Schraedel in 2nd with 19:47. Haylee Downey ran a patient race with a strong 2nd half to finish 3rd in 19:57. Sara Williams, Hannah Naylor, and Sarah Ferrell came in right together at 20:21-20:22 to give us the perfect score, and the top 10 was rounded out with Melanie Sullivan, Addy Rich, and Jennica Robinson. We also had great improvements from Ciara Fuller, Isabella Van Brocklin, Brianna Clark, Andie Groll, Julia Schraedel, Autumn Jenkins, Erin Berry, and Cameron Bunch. Our girls JV team would have won the region title for us, and we are looking like one of the top JV squads in the country. I couldn't be more proud of the commitment and improvement of this group.

The Boys JV team ran extremely tough to keep the momentum going. The lead pack worked hard to keep the pace steady and fast, and we ended up with 9 boys breaking the region JV record time (16:18 by Josh Peters last year). Devin Jaster looked awesome with his individual victory in 15:55 - would have been 14th in the varsity race. It was a great comeback after Devin's Bob Firman race where he ran so hard that he collapsed with 150m to go. Adam Hedquist ran a phenomenal final mile to move up into 2nd with 15:57 - our fastest sophomore of the day. Brigham Halverson was right on their heals with a speedy 16:00.  Zach Moncur (16:05) and Nate Wilde (16:07) wrapped up our top 5 and the perfect score. The top 10 was rounded out by McKay Treadwell (16:13), Seth Stromberg (16:14), Josh Christensen (16:16), Jacob Vaughan (16:17), and Porter Van Drimmelen (16:18). I thought Josh Christiansen (8th in 16:16) also put in a very valiant, pushing the pace for the group through the 2nd mile - willing to risk and hurt. We showed so much strength and depth in the boys JV race - our entire top 10 (and 22 of the top 25) is returning next year (in addition to 4 boys from the varsity). We had big improvements from Nate Iverson, Cole Weaver, Branson Petty, Spencer Bell, Dallin Kitchen, Brandon Manning, Hayden Vance, Caden Wheeler, and so many others. It was really fun watching our boys (Jake, Tanner, Sheffield, Cade H, Hogan, Callor, Datwyler, Kaleb and Kalvin) run down guys from other teams to see how many Davis boys we could have in a row at the finish. 35 guys in a row shatters the old record of 15 set last year.

The Varsity Girls put together their best TEAM race of the season, with 9 girls finishing in the top 10, and a new team time record (top 5 times) of 89:39. Again, it was under near perfect conditions, but we averaged about :23 seconds per runner better than the old record (91:33 by 2012). It was another step in the right direction and another step toward our final goals. We are looking stronger and stronger - and we are ready to KSAD (inside goals are the best). Courtney ran incredibly tough for a 1st place finish and a new course record of 16:58 - it is one of the top 3 mile times in the country this year (especially considering the altitude). She pulled away with a strong 2nd mile. Aubrey stayed patient and tough as the race opened up. She came back on Isabella (West) and pulled away to grab 2nd place in 17:22 - 11 seconds faster than her course record one year ago. Ally and Sam worked very well together to finish 4-5 in 18:19 and 18:25. And Jenna had a big PR and a smart race to pick up 6th in 18:35. Miah is continuing her comeback and dug deep for 7th in 18:49 (watch out for her when she is 100%). Abi Waddoups continued her awesome freshman campaign with an 8th place finish in 18:53 (one of our fastest freshman times ever). Grace Neuenschwander and Madeline English rounded out the top 10 with 18:58 and 19:22. Senior Sydney Zaugg fought well coming off of being sick with a 22nd place finish. These girls are ready for even stronger at the State Championships in 10 days - they are going to need all our support in our biggest test yet. It has been a year with challenges, but we are stronger because of it and we are ready!!

The Varsity Boys really put together something special as well. It may have been one of the top performances in DXC history. Our team time of 75:39 broke the old record by 2:16 (:27 seconds per runner). The old team time record was held by the 2011 team that finished 3rd at NXN. It was an average 3 mile time of 15:07 per runner. We also put 7 guys in the top 10.  We were led by another great race from Camren Todd. Cam ran under the old course record (15:07 by Stokton last year), and nearly pulled off the victory. He closed the gap on Leatham that was as big as 12-15 seconds at one point, and finished with a very fast 3 mile time of 14:54. Our next 5 guys found themselves within 2 seconds of each other with just over a half mile to go. It was awesome to see them pack up and move as a TEAM as the race progressed. It was the kind of TEAM running that wins big championships. Logan MacKay looked back to his old monster-finishing form with a 3rd place finish in 15:06. Colton Rimann dug dep (like he seems to do time after time) to pick up 4th in 15:12. Colter Blanchard finished right with him in 15:13. And Matt Ward was right there as well with 15:14 giving us a :20 spread for 1-5 (our lofty goal was to be under :30). Frasier Williamson was a strong #6 - only :08 back in 15:22 - but more importantly, Frasier helped Matt and Logan keep a steady pace and stay close enough to Colton and Colter throughout the first 2 miles. Whether they were pushing each other or competing with each other - it was one of the toughest displays of TEAM running I have ever witnessed. They just weren't going to let their teammates go no matter what. It showed the spirit and heart we want to re-create at the state meet next week (and NXR in 6 weeks). A TEAM that runs like that will not be beat. Our other varsity runners also ran tough. Josh Peters earned his spot on the state team with a 10th place finish in 15:38. And our 3 seniors showed a ton of guts as they left it on the course in their final region meet - Bryce Ferguson was 13th in 15:49, Britton Porter was 15th in 16:07, and Danny Tumblin finished 19th in 16:23. These 3 guys may have come up short of their state qualifying goal, but they put everything they had into it - both in training and in the race. They constantly make their teammates better, they bring love and passion for running every day, and they have been (and still are) incredible leaders and incredible people. I couldn't be more proud of all of our seniors after this region meet.

Athletes of the Week:
Logan MacKay, Bryce Ferguson, Danny Tumblin
Jenna Connell, Sara Williams, Sydnee Rayl

State Championships: Wednesday, October 21st at Sugarhouse Park. We would like everyone to come and support those representing the entire TEAM. We should, once again, have the loudest and biggest "crazy crew" at the meet. You will all be excused at 11:30 (7th period) and the bus will leave at 11:45. The girls race at 2:00 and the boys are at 3:30. More details to come.

This Week:
Monday - Wednesday: Normal Practice - meet in my classroom at 2:45 (Tuesday will be a hard day).
Thursday - Saturday (UEA): Run on your own - recommended 4-8 miles per day with a 3-4 mile tempo run on Friday; those running at state and the alternates will be meeting on Thursday and Friday at 8:00am (more details to come).

Coming Up:
Wednesday, October 28 - TEAM Pictures @ 3:00pm
Thursday, November 5 - TEAM Banquet @ 6:00pm
Wednesday, November 11 - Pre Nike at Layton Park @ 3:30pm
Saturday, November 21 - Nike Southwest Regionals

We recommend that everyone continue training with the cross country team through November 21 (Nike Southwest) - even if you don't get to go on the Nike trip. It will make you stronger for track and stronger for next year's cross country season - it is not mandatory, but all are welcome to train with the team through that time. Everyone is invited to race in the Pre NXN at Layton Park on November 13. I will hand out a training schedule the week after the state championships. If you are feeling worn down or dealing with an injury, now is the time to get some rest and get healthy. Let me (or one of the other coaches) know, and we will help you make a plan.

Thanks!
Coach Talley
