First of all, excellent job at the Syracuse meet on Wednesday. It was raining and a little bit cold, but you were all very positive and I thought we ran very well as a TEAM. You can see the full results on the blog (www.davisxc.blogspot.com).
We are running very well right now - perfect timing as we head into the final 2 races of the season. I am excited to see what we can accomplish, and I hope that you are all excited and confident that you are going to have your best races and give your best efforts to finish up the season. I hope you all know that we are in this position because of the hard work that you have put in and because of the sacrifices you have made for each other. Thanks for being such a great TEAM. Thanks for trusting in me and your other coaches. Thanks for supporting each other. Over the final 10 days of the season, let's continue to come together and continue to bring the intensity and excitement and passion that makes our TEAM what it is.
In the region race on Wednesday, there are a few records I would like to go after. To make the all-time region list, girls need to run under 22:00, and boys need to be under 17:55. The most boys we have ever had under 17:55 was last year (23). The previous record was 16. I think we can get more than 23 under 17:55 - but we are going to have to see some killer performances by our middle JV guys. I also want to see our varsity go for the all-time TEAM time record on the course. It was set by the 2002 Davis team. We will need to really push the 2nd half of the race to beat it. The most girls we have ever had under 22:00 was last year with 16. It actually tied a previous record. I really think we are in a position to have more girls under 22:00 than ever. The boys will be going for their 15th straight region title. The girls are shooting for #5 in a row.
Coming Up:
Tuesday, Oct. 12th - Mandatory Region Meeting in my classroom at the normal time.
Tuesday, Oct. 12th - TEAM dinners. The boys will be at the Cottrell's house, the girls are going to be at the Brown's house. I will give directions to the houses tomorrow and Tuesday in the meeting. Both dinners will be at 5:30pm. We will be asking you to sign up to bring breadsticks, salad, or some type of dessert. We will also need a few moms (or dads) to go to the houses and help us prepare the spaghetti and sauce.
Wednesday, Oct. 13th - Region Championships at Layton Park. Girls JV - 3:00pm, Boys JV - 3:30pm, Girls Varsity - 4:00pm, Boys Varsity - 4:30pm. If there are any parents who can bring any type of treats - let me know. We are looking for fruit, granola bars, popsicles, fruit snacks, cookies, or anything else (kind of a party after the race). The awards will be at 5:15 - we ask that all of you stay for the awards and the TEAM picture.
Thursday - Saturday (Oct 14, 15, 16) - there is no school. We will still be working out in the morning. The workouts will be primarily for those running at state, but all will be invited to come to the practices. Saturday's workout will be varsity only. Thursday and Friday will be for everyone to attend.
Wednesday, Oct 20th - State Cross Country Championships - more information will be sent out after the region meet.

Good job to our Alumni this past weekend as well. Logan Petty finished as UVU's 4th man (6th place overall) at the SUU Invite with a time of 25:45 for 8k. Jessie Wilding was 10th overall and UVU's 6th finisher with a 5k time of 19:11. Emily Hansen finished 24th with 20:46. Candace Eddy was 3rd overall at the BYU Homecoming 5k with a time of 18:12. And Jeff Taylor finished 14th at the Idaho State Invite with a 6k time of 20:11 on a tough course (I know because I have run it 3 times). It is awesome to have some of our alumni competing well at the college level. We will get to see many of them race at the end of their season when they compete in the Mountain Regional at Rose Park in Salt Lake.

Cross Country Update - Bob Firman Invitational
Darts -
I wish I could capture in words how impressive the Bob Firman trip was this year. We asked you to run with heart and passion and to race rather than just run, and that is exactly what you did. We ran as a TEAM, and it was fun to be a part of. We had athletes entered in 4 different varsity races and we came home with a trophy for each race. It was truly a demonstration of TEAM unity and TEAM depth. Not only did we race well, but you were also very well-behaved on the trip. I appreciate you following the rules. It was nice to see you have so much fun, but also great to see you take the racing seriously like we asked you to. Congratulations as a TEAM on your outstanding performances and on a very successful trip.
The Elite Boys race was one of the most exciting I have seen. We didn't get out too well, but stayed patient and positive and really worked our way up as a group. Joe White led the way with a killer 2nd half of the race. He really was on fire - passing people left and right to finish in 16:10 - the 2nd fastest time ever on the course by a Dart. The other 4 of the top 5 also moved their way up over the 2nd half of the race to all finish in the top 21. Neuner was truly a stud as he came through for us even after a week of being sick (he ran a sick race). Those 5 boys ran a combined time of 1:21.41 which is our team record by 1:20 and is the 5th fastest team time ever run by any team at Bob Firman.
The Varsity Division 1 Boys (our JV squad) was also a really fun race to watch. I thought we ran our plan well, and didn't let the fact that we were running with varsity teams intimidate us. In fact - we won the team competition. Had our top 5 boys been in the Elite race we would have finished 8th - beating 15 teams. We were led by a great race by Matt Swanson. He ran 16:35 to finish 6th and would have been 27th in the elite race. Skylar Williams was our #2 - and he was also the 2nd fastest freshman from any of the races. I also thought we had particularly strong races from Zach Schofield, Colton Cottrell, Ryan Lee, Devin Vance, and Isaac Clouse.
In the Elite girls race we were going up against two of the nation's top 25 teams (Bishop Kelly #19 and Ogden #23). We recently snuck into the rankings as well at #50. We ran a solid race and were as close to Ogden as we have been all year. Shea ran the 2nd fastest time by a Dart on the course at 18:21 - good enough to finish 3rd. Meghan also finished top 20 - earning her 3rd Bob Firman backpack in a row. We had some really strong performances by Anni Andersen, Joanna Boyd, and Madi Holt. One thing that I learned from both Elite races is that it is great to have teammates to step up for other teammates when they are struggling or unable to race.
The Varsity Division 1 Girls (Our JV) did an incredible job racing as a TEAM. I loved the packs of runners that we had throughout the race. Especially our #2-6 girls - they really pushed each other and worked to stay close. We had Nalany run an outstanding race to finish 13th (and win a backpack) with a time of 20:15, and then our 2-6 finished within 13 seconds of each other and earned us our 4th trophy of the day. The only team to beat us was a very strong team from Mountain Crest. Great focus and great energy by our girls in that race. I love how you all run for each other and you are motivated by each other. Keep it up!
I just want to thank each of you for the sacrifices that you make for the TEAM - and for being willing to do what I ask you to do. I know that you are sometimes asked to give up some things of the "normal" high school lifestyle, but it does make our TEAM stronger, and I hope you see that it is good for you as individuals as well. Anyway, I really appreciate your attitudes and your sacrifices. I also really appreciate the parents and the other coaches who gave time and energy to make this trip successful.

DXC Update #4 - Districts and Provo
Darts -
Nice job on a very busy week. We have put in a lot of hard work and we have raced pretty hard through the first half of the season. I don't have time this weekend to type up all of the Davis results, but you can look at the District Championship Results from Wednesday at http://davisxc.blogspot.com/2010/09/district-championship-results.html. I will email the Provo Bulldog 5k results out as soon as I get them from the meet (they still have not sent them out).
The District Championships went extremely well. We had a record 15 girls make the all-time list (sub 19:20), and also a record 14 boys make the list (sub 15:31). We also set the all-time team time record (top 5 times) for the boys - breaking the 1991 Veiwmont team record. It was an impressive outing as we perfect scored the JV Boys, perfect scored the JV girls, and had all 7 varsity girls in the top 10, and 6 of 7 varsity boys in the top 10.
The Provo Bulldog Invitational was on a tough course that ended up measuring closer to 3.2 miles. It was our first time on the course, and it was fun to try a different race. The girls looked very strong this weekend as they perfect scored the JV race in a field of nearly 30 teams. We also came away with a victory in the varsity girls, although I don't yet know the scores. Shea was the overall winner for the 5th time this season - establishing herself as one of the top in the state in any division. Meghan ran a tough race to come back from a rough start and finish 3rd (2nd fastest from 5A). Abby and Anni worked well together to move up through the pack and take 12th and 13th. Joanna stepped up big for us and finished 20th rounding out our top 5.
The boys JV pulled off a 1 point victory over the American Fork JV squad (#1 team in the country). We were led by strong races from Adam Mathias and Skylar Williams. On the varsity side, we ran well as a pack, but looked a little tired - which is to be expected after the hard work we have been putting in and the strong race on Wednesday. We are still on track to hit our TEAM goals - but we have to keep believing and we have to stay focused. Our top 5 all finished in the top 20 (Neuner, Cromar, Johnson, White, Nye) and Swanson had a great race as our 6th man, but we ended up finishing 3rd to American Fork and Pineview (the 2 other nationally ranked teams).
It is important that we regroup on all sides and really prepare for the Bob Firman Invitational. The girls and the boys will both be racing for top 3 finishes in both the elite and the large school varsity races. Really take care of yourselves this week. By that I mean eat well (and eat plenty), hydrate (looks to be about 75-80 degrees), and get your sleep. We will have 1 hard workout this week on Tuesday on the track.
