Another great week of training in the books! I am so happy with how many kids are showing up this summer with a good attitude and who are ready to work hard! What a great group!!! I believe our numbers are higher than any season I've ever been a part of and the excitement and energy is contagious! You should be at 90-100% of your pre-break mileage this week! If you have questions on that, ask me!
I'm going to try hard to keep the emails a bit shorter. Haha.
This week we introduced the HUNGER GAMES. The rules are simple (or are they? We need the seniors to read them off to us this week): basically, you need to stay on your feet all summer with no falls to win the Hunger Games. I, for one, am out. I fell during Coach Catch.

speaking of games...
Dart Games
We will host summer challenges for points, culminating in a grand finale at the end of the summer. The link for the points table is HERE. If you look before 10:00pm I may not have anything up yet...I'm working on it but wanted to get the email out earlier). One way to earn points is by sending your miles in before 10:00pm on Sunday Night.

Berserker Relay
This relay on saturday is obviously not mandatory, but I would love to get a decent group there. If you're free on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., I'd love for you to do it. I think you'll be glad you signed up! Please sign up HERE so I can put TEAMS together. Most kids will do two runs of somewhere between 3-6 miles (I'll put you in groups of how much I know you can run), but we also have a couple of options to run only once. So if you're nervous about doubling, you can just run one time. 8th graders are welcome to join! If you have a long run scheduled for saturday, this is a fun way to break it up, but get the mileage in! Please sign up before tomorrow evening so I can finalize TEAMS. Thanks! (Information on the relay can be found HERE. Once I have the TEAMS finalized, I'll send out some more info to those kids so we can organize transportation and everything else.
This week
Register my Athlete
It's time to start getting physicals and Register My Athlete completed. This need to be done before August 22nd, but I would love if we started to get a jump on it! Register My Athlete is the "paperwork" that athletes need to do to be eligible to compete in high school or junior high school sports. Part of this is getting a physical. If you would like to get a physical at Davis High, the track team does a fundraiser on July 22nd. Athletes can come and get their physical completed for $25. It's a great way to get this done quickly!
Ferritin Testing
I would love for everyone to check their ferritin levels. This is more predictive than a simple iron test for anemia. I think low ferritin is likely the primary reason someone working hard isn't seeing good improvement. Conversely, I think having good ferritin levels can help performance immensely. I've put together a document with ferritin and iron information HERE. Some doctors may say that a ferritin level of 20 is fine, but we want at LEAST 30-50. Under that it will likely affect performance. Quest Diagnostics is a great place to order and get a test without a doctor's note. It is $59. I have done this multiple times for myself and my kids. To get an accurate ferritin reading, you will need to have your blood drawn--it is not a simple finger prick.
See you all in AMERICANA attire tomorrow!
