DXC Summer Update - Week 1 - 5/31/2026

Darts-

Buckle up! I have a lot of info coming your way today.

Wednesday is the first day of practice! (As a reminder this is the first week that we will be tracking summer miles). I care more about bonding as a TEAM this week than the actual workouts and running we'll be doing (although I care about both)! Everyone, come to practice ready to meet people and learn some new things. Veterans, please do all you can to make newbies and younger kids feel awesome and excited.  I got a message from one of my former athletes this week. She said, "you were right, running changed my life and I made the best friends."  There is something really cool about doing something hard and fun with friends. You won't regret it!  I've said it before and I'll say it a million times again: I think a big TEAM is a better TEAM.  Keep inviting your friends.  I'm thrilled about how many kids have already signed up for our email list. Let's go!  ðŸ’Š Here is the email signup link for anyone that hasn't filled it out!

Mileage
This week you'll begin tracking your mileage.  For those that took a two week break, this week you should probably be at about 75% of your pre-break mileage. By Week 2, you should be at about 85% and by Week 3, you'll be close to your pre-break mileage.  Talk to me if you have questions. Next Sunday will be your first day to email me your mileage!

We will meet on the west side of the school near the 1400 hall for our run on Wednesday.  After the run, we'll do a little get to know you game and possibly play some spikeball and crossnet.  Between 8:30 and 9:00ish we will go inside the weight room to lift. Recovery equipment is now all in room 1401,  I can give you all a little tour tomorrow. :) Plan on being done around 9:30-10:00 on Mondays and Wednesdays.

I've spent the last two weeks preparing all I can to make this season the best/most successful it possibly can be.  I'm excited about some traditions that we'll keep up and some fun new things we're going to try!

Lifting
We are going to be VERY intentional about our lifting program this summer and cross country season.  I really believe that this is an area where we can separate ourselves from other TEAMS.  I bought a program (your summer fees at work) from one of the BYU strength coaches for 5k runners (YOU)! We will lift every Monday and Wednesday during the summer after we run.  During the school year we'll continue to lift twice a week.

***abs are not a part of this program-do them EVERY day***

Coach Meetings:
I would like to meet with EVERYONE over the next few weeks.  Be prepared to answer the following questions if you ran last year, if not, we'll just get to know you!  (Also, my schedule is crazy just like all of yours and from time to time, I'll need to reschedule.  Please be patient with that. ðŸ™ I'll do my best to get through everyone by the end of June).

***Please come with most recent ferritin results (if you have them) and your last several weeks/months of mileage (if you have that)**

*What worked really well for me this season? What was my best race?
*What didn't work as well? Was anything missing?
*When did I feel like I was my fittest and most confident? Did I peak at the right time?
*Did you like our lifting program (if you ran at Davis)?
*How am I/can I contribute positively to our TEAM culture?
*What are my goals for the future (summer, this season, next year, etc) and evaluate last years goals
*What is my favorite part of running for Davis High?
*What do I think we can accomplish as a TEAM this year?

Reminder to Pay!
Please remember to send in your summer fees!  Thank you! The cost of the 12 weeks of summer training is $100. Thanks to those who have already paid . The easiest way to pay is venmo @davisrunningclub.  Also, checks made out to "Davis Running Club" or cash will work.  This helps cover chocolate milk, mileage prizes, lifting program, Final Surge app, coaches etc. As a reminder the Davis Running Club is a non-profit that was created to support and put on activities for the Davis High Cross Country Team. :)

Coach Jami

Welcome to Davis Cross Country

 Darts,

If you're getting this email, you or your athlete signed up for Davis Cross Country Summer Running! Wahoo! Best decision! We are stoked to have a strong group returning and to be adding a number of potential Davis XC legends. It was great to see so many of you at the meeting!

We are extremely excited to see what you are made of. Our hope is that each of you will find the motivation, determination, and love necessary to become true members of DXC (Davis Cross Country). Best of luck this summer. If you do it right, the next 12 weeks will transform you into a tougher, more disciplined runner and a stronger person.

Whether you are returning varsity or trying cross country for the very first time, there is a place for you here.

One thing I may not have emphasized enough at our meeting is HOW MUCH FUN WE HAVE during the summer. There is something pretty amazing about a group of teens getting up early, working hard together, and then hanging out afterward. It's the best. Summer running should be fun, and we truly have a blast together.

Meet the Coaches

Coach Jami-many of you already know me and I introduced myself at the meeting so I'll be brief.  I ran for Davis back in high school and had the most amazing experience.  I ran one year for Utah state and then three years for BYU.  Again, I had the best experience.  I believe those experiences taught me how to create a TEAM with a winning and positive culture. I LOVE coaching and I love these special teenagers.  This is truly one of my favorite parts of my life. I love trying to stay in shape by keeping up with these kids!

Coach Sweat will be an Assistant Coach again this year. I mentioned this at the meeting, but I think we are SO LUCKY to get him. He is the epitome of a positive coach and role model. He is incredibly knowledgeable, positive, and brings a ton to the table. Coach Sweat will also be in charge of our cross country class during the school year. Coach Sweat is the best.

Coach Camie Draxler will be helping in a more official role this year. Coach Camie coached at the junior high and has coached Race Cats with me forever. We decided we wanted a coach dedicated to the younger and newer athletes, and Camie is the perfect fit because she already knows so many of them. Camie has a ton of experience with distance running and is our resident ultra runner extraordinaire! We love Camie and are so grateful for her!

I'm also super excited about another new coach we'll be adding this year! Coach Taya Kilgore graduated in 2022. She didn't run cross country during high school, but after graduating she ended up running in college! I cannot wait for her to tell us her story. Coach Taya was finishing up her college season when we had our meeting, but is now done and will be joining us for our first practice.

I will be sending weekly emails on Saturdays or Sundays for the upcoming week. Expect another email with more summer running details before our first day of practice next week. (Let me know if you would like to be removed.)

Last year we were Region Champs in both girls and boys cross country, in both Varsity and JV. I know we are capable of this again, and it all starts here in the summer! We'll work hard and get faster, but we'll do it while bonding as a TEAM, seeing beautiful places, having fun, and becoming better people in the process.

I shared a story at our meeting last year, and I'll share it again here for those who weren't there.

I ran at BYU from 2001–2004. I walked on to the TEAM, but was able to earn an athletic scholarship after my first couple of years. When I was a freshman and sophomore at BYU, we won national championships (incidentally by the lowest score ever at the time). As a walk-on, I wasn't one of the top seven racers, but I was on the TEAM practicing with those girls every single day.

Years later, BYU honored those TEAMs and inducted us into the Hall of Fame. Initially, the athletic director wanted to honor only the seven racers on each TEAM. However, my coach, Coach Shane, insisted that every single person on that TEAM deserved to be honored, whether they raced that day or not.

So every single one of us was included in the Hall of Fame and participated in the ceremony.

While my coach wasn't perfect (as none of us are), I have always appreciated that he understood something important: EVERY SINGLE PERSON matters.

Not just the few who score, but those who push the scorers to be better. Those cheering on the sidelines. Those building TEAM culture in positive ways.

Everyone matters and contributes to the personality, unity, and success of the TEAM.

(Spoiler alert: I ended up running varsity at nationals and earning a scholarship. I was definitely a late-bloomer runner ðŸ˜Š)

XC Email List
Forward this form and this email to your friends to sign up for cross country.  I think a bigger TEAM is a better TEAM and I truly think we're the best club at Davis so let's get as many people here to experience this with us as possible!

Summer Training Meeting
We're really excited for this season of cross country! We have a lot of fun adventures and prizes planned for this season. If you missed the meeting, or lost your handout, you can find it here along with other relevant documents.

Cost
The cost of the 12 weeks of summer training is $100. Thanks to those that have already paid. The easiest way to pay is venmo @davisrunningclub.  Also, checks made out to "Davis Running Club" or cash will work.  This helps cover chocolate milk, pancakes, mileage prizes, coaches etc. (Last year I wasn't able to quite cover my expenses so I had to adjust cost. This equates to $8/week.  I generally charge $15-$20 for group training sessions (similar to what Coach Sweat charges as well)--and I teach the same things, so this is a great deal)!  The Davis Running Club is a non-profit that sponsors the activities and athletes of the Davis Cross Country team.

Summer Miles
We start keeping track of summer mileage on Mon, June 1st. New athletes should start running this week. Run for 15-20 min every day, Mon-Sat. Don't worry too much about your pace yet. Call up your friends, take the dog for a run, go explore a trail, and look for the joy in being active outside. Veterans can start running a little this week if you took last week off.  I would go very easy.  Cross Training would be awesome. Our first official TEAM practice is Wednesday, June 3 at Davis High.  Meet by the 1400 hall west of the school on the grass.

Athletes, remember to send in a summary of your miles after your final run on Saturdays. Keep track of miles and comments however you would like. If you want to use the spreadsheet coach T made, download Running Log Template to your computer. We may end up using an app as a TEAM.  More info on that to come later this week.  I want more information than just distance. Here are a few ideas of what you can write:
  • Time
  • Pace
  • Route
  • Weather or scenery
  • How you felt during the run
  • Crazy encounters with dogs or wild animals ðŸ˜‰
  • Anything else you would like to tell me
Here's an example:

There are many athletes on the TEAM. It's hard to coach everyone if we don't know what you're doing. Sending in your miles is very important. Please, send them in promptly without needing to be reminded.

There will be prizes for hitting summer miles (includes cross-training). There will be a new prize every time the athlete hits 80 miles (girls) or 100 miles (boys). We already have prizes for the first 6 landmarks. Here's one thing we've done in the past:
Polarized sunglasses. The rest of the prizes will be revealed later (we have to finalize some designs/themes).

Cross Training
We count cross-training towards summer miles. Make sure to get your heart rate up during these activities. Sitting on a bike, or wading in a pool doesn't do much for your aerobic fitness if it doesn't challenge you.  Running is the best way to get better at running, but cross training can help you increase volume without getting injured.
  • Swimming
    • 1 mile of swimming = 2 miles of running
  • Road biking
    • 3 miles of road biking = 1 mile of running
  • Mountain biking
    • 2 miles of mountain biking = 1 mile of running
  • Exercise machine (arc-trainer, elliptical, etc.)
    • 12 min of use = 1 mile of running
XC Camp
The dates for camp are July 27-July 30. We have room for about 50-70 athletes. It will be held in the Uintas at Marsh Lake.  This is one of the best weeks of the year.  We will have an invite list for camp.  You must be attending practice (when possible) and be able to run 5 miles to be able to go.

GroupMe
I use emails to get information out generally, but if I need to get something out quickly, here is groupme info.  (Again, we may switch to a different app for mileage tracking and messages.  Details coming soon).
Saturday Breakfast Run Hosting and other volunteer opportunities.
There are so many of you willing to help in lots of ways and I am so grateful for that! If you're willing to host a Saturday breakfast run or help our TEAM in some other way this summer, we will have a sign-up!  I will get that to you this next week!

Iron Information
Please read through this and consider getting tested this summer. I'll emphasize this over and over again all summer and talk about it more in depth in a future email.

I am truly so excited for this summer!  Summer running is the best!

Please reach out to any of us if you have questions.

DXC Summer Update--Week 8--7/20/25

 This Week

I won't be at practice Monday or Tuesday.  I believe that Anna Larsen will be there Monday for sure.  I'll just plan on doing mileage prizes when I get back at Wednesday's practice.

We obviously aren't tapering for the Des News 10k so I'd like you guys to get a little CV work in on Tuesday.  Your CV pace will be about true 5k pace +10-15 seconds.  It would also be similar to your race pace on Thursday.  If you are racing, do 3-4 intervals, if you aren't racing do 5-6. Sorry I won't be there!

Send me your inspirational running videos so we can watch those on Wednesday!

Camp
July 29-Aug 1
Marsh Lake Campground
$200
Can you believe this is in ONE WEEK?!! I am still missing quite a few payments.  Please look over the tracker below to make sure I have you listed and your payment and information correct.

I sent an email out to those who are invited to camp (those who have sent miles in).  If you weren't on that email, but want to go to camp, WE WANT YOU THERE.  Please reach out to me.  As mentioned above, I believe camp is really really important for building TEAM unity and I feel that anyone that wants to be on the TEAM in the fall, should try to go if they can. ðŸĪŽ For those of you going, please venmo $200 to @davisrunningclub and fill out the waiver ASAP.  I would like to get numbers finalized as soon as possible.

This is who I have as coming!  Please look this over and let me know if I got anything wrong!

Des News 10K
Please let me know if you'd like to run the Des News 10K.  If we get at least 3 girls and 3 boys we'll compete as a TEAM in the high school division . So far I have: Izzy Cram, Eliza Knechtel, Erin Christensen, Courtney Burbidge, Jonas Clay, Devin Black, Parker Olson, Noah Hauck and Luke Baughman running. (And me). Please let me know if I missed anyone!

Register My Athlete (RMA)
It is time we start getting ready for the season.  In order to participate in a High School Sport, you will need to get on RMA and do all of the paperwork. This needs to be done before our first race on August 14th. Athletes (grades 9-12) that are planning on competing for Davis Cross Country need to complete Register My Athlete. If you already have an account, go add Cross Country and all other sports you are planning on trying out for this school year.  Here is the link to the website.

FRESHMEN, list Davis High School as your school (not the junior high you're attending).

All you need to do is create an account (or login), E-sign a few documents with your parents, upload the Physical Form A, and you're done.

Physical Night
July 21st @ 6:00pm
An easy/inexpensive way to get your physical done is to come to Physical Night.  Every student-athlete needs a physical once per year. This will be located in the 1300 hall at Davis High.  You will line up outside of the 1300 hall.

We Love Coach T
I want to do something for Coach Timothy to thank him for all he has done for us over the years.  I'd love to have this done by the time school starts.  (We should do something for Hyde as well).  If anyone has any ideas (including parents) and wants to help me on this, please let me know. ðŸ™

Fundraiser
We had another fundraiser push and had a little success so that is good.  I am hoping for a little more, please reach out to more businesses and individuals if you get the chance.
  • Businesses can fill this form out HERE.
  • Individuals can either donate to @davisrunningclub venmo (for club and out of season activities) or to DSDgives for in season expenses.

We appreciate anything. ðŸ™ðŸ™ðŸ™

See you on Wednesday!

DXC Summer Update--Week 7--7/13/25

 Darts,

Thanks to those of you that showed up and worked hard this week.  We have such a great group!  I'm so impressed by those of you that are running on vacation and FSY and doing all of the things that are going to help you all be the very very best you can be. Please keep sending me your miles! We've got some fun prizes coming up!

Some of you know I ran the Spartan this week. It was HARD.  I've done it before, and I was excited to try it again.  I felt really good in my marathon a few weeks ago and feel like my running fitness is pretty good right now so I was feeling pretty confident about the race. My upper body strength hasn't been quite as good since my shoulder accident last year, but I was hopeful it would be good enough.  The race started and I felt AMAZING.  They had us start in waves so I really didn't know where I was in relation to all of the other women, but I knew that I was ahead of all of the women that I started with. I was moving well and passing tons of people.  The race is 14 miles with almost 5000ft of elevation gain (like running up to the top of Snowbasin twice--literally) and has 30 obstacles. They put about 10 of those obstacles in the last half mile. I made it to mile 12 or maybe even 12.5 feeling great.  But around that point, I started to feel HORRIBLE. I felt dizzy, nauseous and my heart rate was through the roof.  I didn't even know if I could finish.  When I was at my very worst, I was at about 13 or 13.5 miles and we had to carry a HEAVY bucket a long way straight up and straight down a hill (this picture is deceiving- I swear it was 4x this long).
IMG_0556.HEIC
I had quite a few people pass me during this time.  It was so discouraging.  I wanted to cry.  I wanted to quit. (Have you ever felt that in a race)?  It took me SOOOOO long. But I got to the bottom of that dumb bucket carry and I saw my sister-in-law Haleigh!  That was enough of a morale boost to help me continue on.  She followed me, cheered me on, and took pictures. ðŸĪŠ  It literally saved me.

I ended up placing.  (You can never control who is in the race, so placing doesn't always mean anything, but I was happy about it nonetheless). Sometimes you feel amazing, sometimes you don't, but there are always things to learn! Grateful for another race and another experience.
PXL_20250712_195009776.jpg

Did you know that there have been studies done that show that you feel less pain when you are in the presence of a family member or loved one?  I FELT that yesterday. Have you ever wanted your mom, dad, or sibling nearby when getting treated for a broken arm, or going through something else painful?   I've been thinking about this fact this week.  This is what we are as a TEAM.  We are the FAMILY that is there for each other when things get hard, whether in a race, practice or just in life.  This is why building TEAM unity is so dang important in cross country.  I believe this is why my TEAM at BYU was so good.  We were incredibly unified and close (if you ever see me with any of my old teammates, you know). When you care about someone or something more than yourself you are able to push harder and dig deeper.  So, HOW do we build unity and camaraderie?  How do we become a family?  I think one way is doing hard things together.  That is what practice is.  I think another very important way to build TEAM bonds is through the in between moments.  The stretching or playing spikeball after practice, the swimming in Farmington Pond, CAMP and RETREATS.  So, while my job isn't a professional party planner.  It IS super important we do these things because that's how we become a TEAM. If you are able, I hope you will prioritize camp this year.  I promise you won't regret it.

One more cheesy thought.  Today I went to Sam Lundberg's farewell and also Brandon Geckler's homecoming (from their LDS missions).   I saw so many Darts, current and former and my heart was just so full as I saw so many of you all in one place. I love those old alumni, I love the new group, so fun to have such a long line of Davis greatness. I truly have the best "job."

This Week
We have the boys retreat this week!  Girls, you are on your own on Tuesday and Wednesday. I will be leaving out of town on Friday and won't be back until Tuesday of next week.  Sweat is also out of town, but hopefully Sister Yates and maybe Anna Larsen (hoping she can help a little this summer)!! can come to Vita next Monday.

DXC Summer Update--Week 6--7/6/25

Darts,

It made me so happy to see all of you running together over moratorium!  I took the week to do some fun adventures in the mountains. ðŸĪĐ Running is the best!  I can take you the most amazing places.  One of the highlights was the moratorium alumni run that I've done ever since I started coaching. Once you graduate you can come with me.

Every week I feel like I have an insane amount of information.  Just a reminder that you can find our schedule, past emails and other info on the DXC blog

This Week
On some weeks we will now be adding a Tuesday practice.  We will be doing "critical velocity" workouts.  These are really comfortable.  This is to practice running a little harder, but not straining.  I'll explain it more at practice.

We have had the craziest week of scheduling and rescheduling in our Region and District.  In the end we ended up moving the District meet up a couple of weeks.  Please note the schedule change and also note that this may not be final!

Parent Help
I feel so grateful to have so many of you willing to help.  I have realized that I'm kind of bad at letting people know how they can help. I created this spreadsheet for volunteers and myself so I can be more clear on what I want help with and what I want to do. :)  We will talk about this at the parent meeting when school starts and maybe we can link this on the sign-up genius.  We have the BEST parents and help at Davis.  Thank you so much. :)  One of my core values, I've decided, is that I really like the kids to have a chance to plan and lead EVEN if that doesn't look like how we may do it, as adults.  So in many of our events I will have the kids take the lead and that is what I want. ðŸĪŽ.

Clothes Form
This may not be exactly what we order for the TEAM, but please fill this out if you plan on running this fall so I know how many of which sizes to order (I have to order way before we create rosters for our TEAMS). I was hesitant to add the gear pictures etc to this because I don't want there to be expectations or unmet expectations because we don't know 100% what we can get.

Coach Meetings
Still working on getting through these!  Sign-up HERE!  So sorry if I've missed any of you! Sign-up again)!

Mileage
Even though we have the Final Surge app, I'm not an expert at it quite yet, so please send your mileage in.  This is what I have so far this summer.   Lots of you will be getting mileage prizes this week!

We have a couple of new people this week!  Wahoo!  Let's make sure we're all doing our best to welcome anyone new! Can't wait to see you all again!  It feels like it's been 17 years!
See you tomorrow!
