DXC Update - State Championships

Darts -
We had some legendary performances at the state championships on Wednesday. It was such a fun and rewarding way to end our regular season. All of the hard work and sacrifices paid off as we worked as a TEAM and had a very strong state meet for both the boys and the girls. I really want to thank our entire TEAM for believing in each other, for trusting your coaches, and for doing everything we could to race our best throughout the season. I also want to thank each of you for bringing so much energy and excitement to the state meet. Those of you who didn't race were still very valuable and were as awesome as ever at cheering on your teammates on the course. Those of you who did race did an outstanding job putting your whole heart into the race and running very close to our race plan. I was inspired by your teamwork and the guts you showed in the race. Also a special thanks to all of the parents who have done so much for us this season - by bringing treats to meets, sending food to dinners, sacrificing family time, keeping your sons and daughters healthy and strong, and for coming to so many of our meets to cheer us on and share in the excitement. And lastly - thanks to Coach Brad Anderson and Coach Paul Timothy for their time, expertise, and inspiration to each of us.
The girls completely owned the day. All 7 of our girls finished in the top 18 in the race. It is the first time on the current state course (1998-2013) where a 5A team has had all 7 runners finish under 20. We scored 27 points to finish ahead of American Fork (90), Jordan (120), and Bingham (132). And our top 5 team time of 92:27 was the all-time record for the course - beating the old record by 1:23. We were led by a great 1-2 punch of Aubrey Arygle and Taylor Cox. They worked together through most of the race. Aubrey had a great final 400m to finish 2nd in 18:09. It was the 6th fastest time from any division, the Davis High record (old record was 18:27 by Natalie Haws), and the 2nd fastest time ever run by a freshman on the course (from any division). Taylor also broke the old Davis record with her time of 18:18 which was good enough for 4th place in the race. Our next trio of runners was Ashley Tyndall, Kenzie Weir, and Sierra Graham who finished 8-9-10, all three earning all-state status. Ashley and Kenzie worked very well together moving up through the teens and running very strong over the second half of the race. Sierra was a little farther back, but made a very strong push over the final mile to move up to 10th. The 3 of them ran 18:37, 18:38, and 18:43 - giving us the team time record and a very solid :34 gap for our top 5. Hannah Albrechtsen and Aimee Vance rounded out our top 7 with their 17th and 18th place finishes. Hannah ran 18:58 (Davis #19 all-time), and Aimee ran 19:05. They would have been the top runner on 8 of the 16 teams in the race. Overall, we ran a gutsy, smart race. All 7 of the girls put themselves in position over the first half and then raced tough over the second half.
The boys went into the race ranked 4th in a very competitive field - probably one of the deepest team fields in state history. We had a young group in the race - with only Skylar and Stokton having previous state meet experience. I feel like this group has really proven their toughness throughout the season, and they showed it again at the state meet. Skylar led the way for us. He ran the course in 15:45 - the #5 all-time mark from Davis. It was good enough for a 7th place finish and his first all-state award. I was most proud of the way Skylar dug deep over the final 600m of the race. He found a way to finish strong at the most grueling section of the race. He has done an incredible job for 4 years - and was very worthy of this all-state finish. It was very fun to watch Josh Ward as he moved up from 25th at 1 mile to 17th at 2 miles and 12th at the finish line. He is a fighter. His time of 15:50 was our #8 all-time and the 2nd fastest junior time we have ever had. Colton Rimann has been pure strength for us all year. He has worked extremely hard to get to where he is. Colton ran 16:18 to finish 28th and was the #4 sophomore in the race, and the #3 sophomore ever from Davis. Logan MacKay has really come through for us in big meets this year -and his finish at state proved once again that he can kick with the best. With about 800m to go, he was sitting in 45th - he passed 15 guys to finish 30th with 16:22 - the #6 sophomore in the race and #4 all-time sophomore from Davis. Kimball Potter has also worked really hard to be in our top 5. He came through big for us in the 2nd half of the race - moving up through the pack to finish 41st in 16:35. Ethan Stuart was 51st in 16:53 - beating nearly every team's 6th man. He had to fight hard for it over the final mile - but really showed toughness down the stretch. And Stokton Smith finished 67th in 17:10. It may not have been Stokton's best day - but he showed once again that he is a fighter. Even though he was having flu-like symptoms and is coming off of a nagging hip injury - Stokton still gave his all - which is all that we would ever ask of any of you. Our boys TEAM really showed a lot of heart and really showed that they are champions. Their team time of 1:20.51 is our #3 fastest all-time on the course - faster than the 2010 team that went on to qualify for and finish 11th at NXN, and faster than the 2002 and 2007 teams who won the state championships. And the best part is that we have even more in us - and we are going to prove that at NXR and NXN.

I put this quote up on the board on Thursday - but I think it really applies to our state meet: "Never let a win go to your head, or a loss go to your heart." I hope that you boys are as hungry as ever and really ready to work extra hard and earn a chance at racing in Portland. It is totally a possibility - we have done what we needed to in getting to this point - and if we do what we need to over the next 4 weeks, we give ourselves a chance. I hope you girls are ready to put in the work that could prepare us to race for a national title. It is going to take our best efforts - not just in the final races - but in everything we do for the next few weeks. We need to stay humble, keep working, keep having fun, and stay very focused on preparing ourselves and becoming as tough and confident as we can be at the starting line in Tempe (and in Portland).

Athletes of the Week: Skylar Williams, Kimball Potter, Kenzie Weir, Sierra Graham

Upcoming Schedule: For those who are going to NXN Southwest, we will start practice again tomorrow (Monday) - and we might even start with a hard day. Be prepared. I will hand out the schedule for the next 4 weeks at practice. For those who are not going to NXN Southwest - I would still invite and encourage you to work out with us over the next 4 weeks. It will help you prepare for indoor track, outdoor track, and next year's cross country season.

24 Hour Run: We are hoping to pull off the 24 hour run this week on Friday-Saturday (November 1-2). There is a football game (state playoffs) on the field, so we are going to have to get creative for about 4-5 hours of the 24 hours. We will probably be running at Fiesta, on the treadmill, or on the indoor track to keep the run going. We use the 24 hour run as an opportunity to raise money for the NXN Southwest trip. I will explain more on Monday and I will pass out your pledge sheets. All of the team should participate in the 24 hour run - even those who are not attending the Nike Southwest trip.

TEAM Banquet: The tentative date for the banquet is Thursday, November 7th. Please let me know ASAP if you can see any conflicts with that date. It will probably go from 6-8pm.

Please keep Rachel Clouse in your thoughts and prayers. She was in a 4-wheeler accident this past weekend and is currently in the ICU at Primary Children's Hospital. We will update you on her status throughout the week.

Thanks for each being a part of such an incredible TEAM and family. I appreciate all of you and what you have given. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with each of you.
Sincerely,
Coach Talley

DXC Update - Region Champs

Darts -
It was a great week for DXC once again. We brought home 2 region titles, we were able to get some solid training in, and we are looking healthy and strong and prepared for the state championships. It is just about the best time of year to be a distance runner - in the heart of the cross country season with the crisp fall weather to run in on a daily basis.

Region Championships - I was so proud of the TEAM performance at Layton Park last Monday. We ran strong in all 4 races, and we had some of our best individual and TEAM races of the season. The full results can be seen on the blog (www.davisxc.blogspot.com).
The JV girls started us out very strong with a 1-10 sweep. We were led by a great race from Chelsey Johnson who has been patient and determined through her stress fracture recovery. Her time of 19:27 was a region JV record (for as far back as I could find in the results). It would have placed her 15th in the varsity race, and she would have been the number 1 runner on 4 of the 7 teams. Chelsey was followed closely by Sam Hedquist with 19:30.
The JV boys also looked solid as we put a record number of boys under 18:00 (25 with varsity and JV combined). We ended with a perfect score (1-5) and 15 of the top 20 runners. Our top 5 JV boys finished within :06 of each other. Daniel Tumblin was the individual champ in 16:49 and was followed by Britton Porter, Brandon Peters, Frasier Williamson, and Cameron Todd. All 5 of those boys will be coming back next season. If they had been in the varsity race, they would have almost qualified for state by finishing in the top 4 teams.
The Varsity Girls continued to show tremendous strength. By the time they were racing, the course was getting pretty muddy and sloppy. I think that the course was running 10-15 seconds slower than it would have if the ground were dry. Our girls did not let it bother them much as we had our top 8 runners in the top 10 of the race. We were led by Aubrey Argyle who made a strong move with 1/2 mile to go and didn't look back. She is the first freshman to win the region championships, and she is only the 3rd girl to ever run under 18:00 (Ellie and Shea were the first 2 a year ago). Taylor Cox and Ashley Tyndall also ran very strong and set the pace for us most of the way. They finished 4-5 in 18:20 and 18:23. Kenzie Weir (6th), Aimee Vance (7th), Sierra Graham (8th), Ally Geisler (9th), and Hannah Albrechtsen (10th) rounded out the top 10. Grace Neuenschwander and Josey Hedquist also ran tough finishing 12th and 13th.
The Varsity Boys finished the day for us with a 23 point effort to win by 27 points over 2nd place Weber. We ran a smart, patient race - and really emerged as the leaders over the final mile of the race. Skylar Williams wrapped up an incredible region career with a 1st place finish. He was 9th as a freshman, 6th as a sophomore, 3rd as a junior, and 1st as a senior. He has always shown guts and determination, and it really paid off in his 4th all-region performance and his first individual championship. Josh Ward ran great to finish 2nd. Logan MacKay had another monster finish for 4th. Colton Rimann stayed steady and strong for 7th. Stokton Smith continued his comeback with a great 9th place finish. And Kimball Potter, Colter Blanchard, and Matt Hawkins finished right together in 10-11-12 (giving us 8 of the top 12 finishers). It was our strongest race of the season so far and our best 1-5 spread in a big meet (:35). We will be shooting for under :30 in both the boys and the girls races at state. It was the boys 19th straight region championship - we have not lost since 1994. The Standard Examiner referred to it as a "Dynasty on the Run".

State Championships - Wednesday (10/23) at Sugarhouse Park. We want the entire TEAM there - obviously those who are racing - but also everyone else. Plan on making a lot of noise and being the craziest, most excited fans on the course. Our '8th man' can make a huge difference on this very challenging course. Both those who are running and those who are cheering should prepare for our best performance of the season. For any parents and siblings who are coming to the race - make sure NOT to run alongside any of the competitors - it is considered aiding the runner. You also have to keep your shirts on (sorry - it's a rule).
We will be stopping at Cafe Rio on the way home from the meet. You each need to bring $5 and we will cover the rest. Here is the state meet schedule:
11:15 - excused from school (bring your lunch with you).
11:30 - buses leave
2:00 - Girls 5A Race
3:30 - Boys 5A Race
6:30 - Back to the School
*Let me know if you have any questions about the state championships.

TEAM Pictures - Thursday (10/24) - Bring your uniforms, your black 'Davis XC' shirts, and boys bring your 'Jan's Boys' shirts. We will also be watching the video footage from state on Thursday.

*There will be no practice this week on Friday and Saturday. I would like you to go for a 3-7 mile run on one of the two days. We will begin our training for NXN on Monday (10/28).

Alumni Update - Many of our alumni have been racing cross country for colleges throughout the state. Preston Johnson and Ellie Child both finished in Weber State's top 5 this last weekend at the Adidas Invitational in Wisconsin. Joanna Boyd is running on the travel squad at Utah State. Jessie Wilding and Seth Gutzwiller have been racing well in UVU's top 5. Shea Martinez is coming back from a late summer injury and Joe White is back from a mission - both are preparing for the track season at BYU. And Jared Ward raced his first marathon last week in Chicago where he finished 19th and was the 6th fastest American with 2:16.18. Jared is done with cross country, but still has a track season with BYU.

NXN Southwest - By the end of this week (hopefully Thursday), I will announce the initial invite list for the trip to Tempe for NXN Southwest. We are going to be able to bring about 50 athletes. Those who are invited will be expected to continue training with us until the trip. Those who are not invited are encouraged to keep training with the group through November 21st. I have attached the itinerary which includes hotel information. Let me know if you have other questions.

This is a big week for all of us. I just want to tell each of you how grateful I am for this TEAM. I am so proud of all of you and the hard work and sacrifice that have gone into making this season great. Be very positive all throughout the week. Think happy thoughts - don't get too stressed out - just keep doing what we have been doing. Have fun and be relaxed. Be confident. Believe in yourselves and in your TEAM. I believe in each of you. I know you are tough and I know you have prepared to have your best race of the season. DXC is going to show up when it matters most!!

DXC Update - Barnes Park

Darts -
The Region Championships are here. It has been an incredible season so far. We have accomplished a lot as a TEAM, and I am so proud of all the work you have done. This is one final chance for our entire TEAM to show what we are made of. I want to see each of you running tough, having fun, and giving all you can for your TEAM.

Mental Preparation for a Big Race:
1) Physically prepare - make sure that you are getting a good amount of sleep (for 4-5 days), make sure you are eating right, and make sure you are hydrating for a few days before the race. I find when I know I have done a good job physically preparing, I feel so much more confident in what I am going to do.
2) Don't overthink the race. It is good to have a race plan, and many people like to visualize how the race will go - but don't think about it to the point that you get really nervous. Realize that it is just running - when it comes down to it - you are going to push yourself and run as hard as you can just like you do on a weekly basis.
3) Never put too much emphasis on one race. I hope that each of you PR and each of you have your best race of the season, but you are not always going to have your best day (I think you all know that by now). Realize that there is nothing wrong with having an off day. Do your best to prepare for a great day and be positive, but also know that you will have other opportunities to challenge yourself and show what you are made of. No matter what happens - commit to giving your best effort - whether you feel awesome or you feel like it is a rough day.
4) Find a way to stay relaxed while still being excited. I like to listen to music which gets me determined without getting me too fired up for a race.

I believe in each of you. I know that you are strong and I know that you are prepared. When you get to the point in the race that is the toughest, remember all the work you have done, think of your teammates struggling and fighting along side you, and find a way to push through any pain and any doubt.

Barnes Park Race - The results are online at www.davisxc.blogspot.com - It was a very solid TEAM performance for us going into the region championships against the same 6 teams. Congrats to Kent Thompson and Grace Neuenschwander for earning varsity spots for the region meet. Also congrats to Skylar Williams, Taylor Cox, Kaitlyn Datwyler, and Britton Porter for their individual wins. We had a record 32 boys under 18:00 (with only 11 seniors in that group), and a record 13 girls under 19:40 - also setting a new TEAM time record for the course with a top 5 average of 18:22.

Athletes of the Week: Kelton Johnson, Brady England, Grace Neuenschwander, Elise Anderson

Region Championships - Monday at Layton Park. We are going for our 18th straight region title on the boys side (which has to be some kind of record), and our 8th straight for the girls. It should be an exciting day for both the varsity and JV runners. Here is the schedule:
1:15 - Excused from school (1:05 for 9th graders) - if you need to stay in school, please have your parents bring you over (just make sure you are there at least 1 hour before you race).
1:30 - Buses leave
3:00 - Girls JV
3:30 - Boys JV
4:00 - Girls Varsity
4:30 - Boys Varsity
5:15 - Awards (I would like everyone to stay until all the awards are finished)
*We will do popsicles one last time if any parents would like to bring 18-24 of them and put them in the white cooler.
*Thanks for all the help at the region dinners on Friday night.
*Don't forget to dress up for school on Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday - We will have practice for everyone - even if region was your final race.

UEA - We will have practice on Thursday and Friday for those who are running at state and the alternates. The rest of you are expected to run on your own all 3 days of UEA break if you are hoping to go to Nike Southwest with the TEAM. The Nike Southwest group will be announced shortly after the state championships.

State Championships - Wednesday, October 23rd at Sugarhouse Park. The buses are going to leave at 11:30. I would like everyone to plan on coming to the state meet to support the TEAM (even if you are not running). I promise you will have a great time. The girls will race at 2:00 and the boys race at 3:30.

Darts run to top of national rankings

By Chris J. Miller, Standard-Examiner staff

Mon, 10/07/2013 - 11:47pm

KAYSVILLE -- The Davis High School cross country juggernaut is in the midst of another successful season, with both the boys and girls squads doing well in the statewide and regional events.

But while there are plenty of superlatives to describe the Darts program, Davis High reached another milestone last week as the girls squad earned a No. 1 ranking by Dyestate.com.
The Davis girls had previously been ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation, whild the Darts boys have had a No. 3 ranking in years past, but this is uncharted territory for coach Corbin Talley and the 35 girls on the cross country roster.
"I think we have been amazed at how this team has responded to each other," Talley said. "This group has shown a willingness to go through a lot of pain, to work for each other. We've never had a team do it so well."
New York's Fayetteville-Manlius has been the top team for the past seven season, winning all seven Nike Nationals. But the New York high school has been defeated several times this year, opening the door for other teams.
And the Darts ran through it.
With an amazing team victory at last month's Bob Firman Invitational in Boise, Idaho -- a race in which Davis set the combined team course record -- the Darts earned the top spot in the Oct. 5-6 rankings.
"From our perspective, that race is what propelled us to the top," Talley said. "It's been exciting.
Talley said numerous former Davis runners have sent their congratulations.
Talley admitted he and assistant Brad Anderson weren't sure how good this team would be as the season began.
"We thought we could be really good; if we worked hard we could win a state title," he said. "But it's how they have responded to each other that is exciting."
The team is paced by Taylor Cox, Hannah Albrechtsen, Aimee Vance, McKenzie Weir, Ashley Tyndall and Aubrey Argyle.
Argyle is the super freshman who is pushing, and being pushed by the upperclassmen.
"Aubrey is spunky for sure. She makes the senior girls work for everything they get. And they make her work too."
With the Region 1 championships set for Monday afternoon, followed by the state cross country championships on Oct. 23, the Darts will focus in-state for the next month.
The Darts will run in the Nike Southwest Regionals on Nov. 23 in Arizona. The top two teams earn a spot in the Nike Nationals In Portland, Ore. Davis aims to be one of those two teams.
"There are some amazing teams out there," Talley said. "There are some that could beat us. But there aren't any we cannot beat either."
Two other Utah girls teams were ranked in the top 50. Park City checked in at No. 22, with American Fork No. 33.
Invididually, Herrriman's Lucy Biles is ranked 15th nationally; Ogden senior Sara Feeny is ranked No. 22 overall.
On the boys side, American Fork is ranked No. 3 nationally, with Lone Peak 13th, Bingham 18th and Davis at No. 38. Alta's Kramer Morton is ranked No. 23 individually.

DXC Update - Westlake Invitational

Darts -
It is hard to believe that we are already at the championship part of our season. The state cross country championships are only 17 days away. It goes without saying that the upcoming week is crucial to our performance at the state meet. It is also very important that EVERYONE take care of themselves and prepare both physically and mentally starting NOW for the region and state championships. Make sure you are getting the sleep you need, staying on top of your schoolwork, eating well, and thinking positively. We have put so much time preparing for these final races - summer mileage, mile repeats, tempo runs, hill repeats, distance runs, previous races, 400s, vita course, and so many other things. This is our time! The improvement we have seen up to this point in the season is phenomenal, but we have even more in us. Believe in yourselves and in your TEAM, and put everything you have into your final races of the season. I hope you all know that you have made me a believer that this TEAM can accomplish great things - I believe in each of you. If you are not satisfied with the season so far, give your all these final races so that you can walk away satisfied and proud of your efforts.
We had two very solid races this week. We did a good job running as a TEAM at the region meet at Viewmont. We swept all 4 races, and we are looking good going into the region championships in 8 days.
We also looked strong at the Westlake Invitational. I was most impressed with our JV squads. We had 28 boys in the JV race run under 18:00 (under 6:00 per mile). We had some huge improvements over the past few races from Frasier Williamson, Brandon Peters, Matt Ward, Mitch Perry, Josh Christiansen, Logan Haviland, Jason Lang, Zach Moncur, Jake Welling, Nate Butterfield, Josh Peters, and Dallin Kitchen - who each improved by over 100 seconds from their Bob Firman races. Our goal was to risk a little more than normal during the middle of the race and then trust that we could finish as strong as we have been finishing - the JV boys definitely did that. We came out victorious over Westlake who had beat our JV boys earlier in the year (Highland Invite). The JV girls also came out victorious over a deep American Fork team. Our biggest improvements came from Morgan Miller, Sophie Cottrell, Sariah Dixon, Sydney Zaugg, Amber Berry, and Baylee Reynolds.
The boys varsity race had 6 of the top 50 teams in the U.S. We ended up 3rd place in a very tight race. We are going to see the top 5 teams at the state meet and it is going to be a fight. American Fork (who will most likely run their varsity), Bingham, Lone Peak, Westlake, and Riverton (who ran well at Park City), are all going to be in the 5A race. The state meet might be the deepest and most competitive it has ever been. At Westlake, we ended only 8 points out of first place. We were led once again gutsy races from both Skylar and Josh. Our strongest performance in the varsity race came from Logan MacKay who had a huge 2nd half of the race to end up as our #3 runner. We are continuing to show progress - but we have got to really come together and really prepare for the final 2 weeks.
The varsity girls got some exciting news on Thursday this week when we found out we are currently ranked #1 in the U.S. (after our record-breaking performance at Bob Firman). You can see the rankings here - http://www.dyestat.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=44531&do=news&news_id=183937 It is news we have decided not to focus on. We are not going to get too caught up in the hype of the position - but instead we are going to take it one workout and one race at a time - continuing to work hard, have fun, be unified, and love what we are doing. We had a strong showing at Westlake with 8 girls in the top 16 runners. Aubrey ended up 2nd with 17:24 and showed a lot of guts down the final 800m. Ally also came through big for us with her 12th place finish as our 5th runner.
